2027: APC Opens Door For Anyone Wishing To Contest Tinubu’s Ticket.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that any party member wishing to contest its 2027 presidential ticket is welcome, even though the party has adopted President Bola Tinubu for a second term.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This was disclosed by the party’s Deputy National Organising Secretary, Chidi Duru, in an interview with Punch ahead of the APC National Convention scheduled for Abuja from March 27–28, 2026.

Duru explained that while the party may lean toward a consensus approach, it remains open to aspirants willing to test their popularity. He noted that in line with democratic norms, incumbents often have an advantage when seeking re-election, especially if party members are satisfied with their performance.

He highlighted the principle of a “right of first refusal,” which is linked to performance and the party’s need to field candidates who uphold its ideology and manifesto:

“It is not that we are likely, we will have a consensus. That is an indication of the APC being a democratic party. But should a member wish to throw his hat in the ring? He is more than welcome.
The reason is that parties must ensure that those they give the ticket to will faithfully implement the party’s ideology and manifesto. If they perform well, they earn the right of first refusal and will be presented to the electorate. If they are unpopular or underperform, the party cannot risk fielding them, as it could cost the election.”

On whether the consensus approach could apply to governorship and other elective offices, Duru expressed personal support for giving incumbents the opportunity to seek a second term. He dismissed fears that automatic tickets might trigger internal discontent, noting that constitutional provisions allow second-term bids.

He added:

“Executives who have served one term and have the opportunity for a second should be granted the right of first refusal. This ensures the party remains vigilant, holding officeholders accountable while motivating them to deliver on their mandate. If they fail, they risk losing the election.
It is not by accident that the constitution allows elected governors and the president to run for a second term. Party members understand that once it’s constitutionally permitted, the possibility of re-election cannot be denied.”
