The aggrieved workers took to the streets, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, expressing frustration over what they described as prolonged neglect and hardship.

Protesters said the delay in payment has left them struggling to meet basic needs such as food, rent, and school fees for their children.

Some accused the local government leadership of insensitivity, claiming that repeated appeals for intervention had yielded no results.

“We have families to take care of. Seven months without salary is unbearable,” one worker lamented during the protest.

In response, Council Chairman Dr. Chidi Llyod explained that the delay is due to an ongoing staff verification exercise designed to eliminate ghost workers and curb financial leakages.

“The process is necessary to ensure transparency and accountability in salary payments,” he stated, adding that only verified and legitimate workers will receive payment.

Dr. Llyod assured that salaries would be disbursed once the verification is completed and urged workers to remain patient and cooperate with the process.

Despite these assurances, the protest underscores growing discontent among local government workers and raises concerns over welfare and governance at the grassroots level.

The defendants in this 23-count case, which includes allegations of conspiracy, forgery, criminal breach of trust, and official corruption, are:

  • Aishatu Bappa El-Nafaty: Director of Public Affairs in the Directorate of Special Duties and Parliamentary Security.

  • Mahmud Alhaji Abubakar: A former Permanent Secretary at the National Assembly.

  • Igba Ityoakura Joseph: A Deputy Director of Procurement.

The re-arraignment was stalled by legal challenges:

  • Counsel for the second defendant, Muhammed Ndayako (SAN), filed a preliminary objection seeking to strike out six counts (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 18), claiming these charges were previously dismissed by the court on May 12, 2025.

  • The EFCC counsel, Francis Usani, opposed this move, labeling the objection as a “frivolous” attempt to delay the proceedings, as it was filed on short notice.

  • The first defendant also signaled her intention to file a similar objection.

According to the amended charges involving actions between 2017 and 2019, Aishatu Bappa El-Nafaty is accused of dishonestly converting ₦89.87 million from National Assembly accounts into her personal account and forging receipts from Fazah Integrated Services Limited.

Justice Muhammed Zubairu has ordered the first defendant to file her objection within 48 hours and adjourned the case until September 23, 2026, for a hearing on the preliminary objections.
