“Presidency Clarifies Nigeria-UK Migration Deal, Warns Against Fake News”.
The Presidency has clarified that the recent migration partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom does not obligate Nigeria to accept foreign nationals. The statement, issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s UK visit covers only the repatriation of verified nationals of each country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
“Nowhere in the 12-page memorandum is Nigeria required to accept non-citizens,” the statement said.
The MoU, signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Interior and the UK Home Secretary, aims to ensure safe, orderly, and regulated migration, while strengthening bilateral cooperation to combat irregular migration and related offences. Returnees must undergo multiple identification and verification processes, and any errors would see them returned to the requesting country at its expense.
The agreement requires that all returnees are treated with dignity, respect, and in line with international human rights standards. Individuals may appeal deportation decisions under domestic and international law. The Nigeria Immigration Service retains full authority over travel documentation and entry procedures, ensuring that Nigeria maintains control over its immigration processes.
Returnees will also receive reintegration support, which may include short-term assistance such as airport reception, accommodation, transport, and care packages; medium-term help like family reunification, documentation, and counseling; and long-term support including access to education, vocational training, or business opportunities through a Returnee Education and Entrepreneurship Fund.
The MoU is valid for an initial five-year period, renewable for another five years, and mirrors prior agreements signed in 2012, 2017, and 2022. The Presidency urged media outlets and the public to seek clarification to avoid spreading misinformation about the partnership.
