The resignations come in line with a presidential directive requiring all political appointees seeking elective offices to step down by March 31. This directive was confirmed in a statement from Dewan Goshit, Head of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The statement explained that the affected appointees must vacate their offices to comply with electoral regulations. It read in part:

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration intending to contest elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026, in accordance with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the INEC timetable for party primaries.”

The circular, signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued by Permanent Secretary General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, applies to all categories of presidential political appointees who wish to participate in party primaries or seek nomination for any elective office.

According to reports, the officials expected to resign include:

  • Adebayo Adelabu – current Minister of Power from Ibadan, appointed in 2023

  • Adebayo Shittu – Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences since June 2024

  • Rauf Olaniyan – Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal College of Education Special Oyo since July 2024

All three are reportedly aspiring gubernatorial candidates under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State.

While none of the officials has formally resigned as of this report, sources indicate that their exits are imminent as they move to comply with the President’s directive and pursue their political ambitions.

This development marks the early stages of the 2027 Oyo State governorship race, with key political figures already positioning themselves for the contest.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
