Eid-El-Fitr Update: Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs Confirms Moon Not Sighted, Sa’ad Abubakar Says Fasting Continues.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced that the Shawwal moon was not sighted in Nigeria on Wednesday. Consequently, he declared Friday, 20th March 2026, as the day of Eid-El-Fitr.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The declaration was made through a statement issued by the Sultanate Council of Sokoto’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs in collaboration with the National Moon Sighting Committee.

According to the statement signed by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee, Sambo Wali Junaidu, no credible reports were received from any part of the country confirming the sighting of the Shawwal crescent on Wednesday, March 18, which corresponded to the 29th day of Ramadan.

As a result, Muslims across Nigeria are to observe the Ramadan fast on Thursday, 19th March 2026. “Thursday, March 19, 2026, shall therefore be observed as the 30th day of Ramadan 1447AH,” the committee stated, following the Islamic lunar calendar.

Acting on this report, the Sultan and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs approved the declaration of Friday as Eid-El-Fitr. “His Eminence has accepted the report and accordingly declared Friday, 20th March 2026, as the first day of Shawwal 1447AH,” the statement added.

The announcement aligns with an earlier declaration by authorities in Saudi Arabia, where the crescent moon for Shawwal 1447 was also not sighted. Saudi Arabia confirmed that Eid-El-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, will be observed on Friday, following the completion of 30 days of fasting according to the Islamic lunar calendar, as stated by the Saudi Press Agency on behalf of the country’s Supreme Court.

Eid-El-Fitr timing is traditionally based on the sighting of the crescent moon, signaling the end of Ramadan. Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, requires Muslims to abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, and other physical needs during daylight hours. The period is also marked by increased acts of charity, encouraging believers to support the less privileged.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
