The command’s spokesperson, Kenneth Daso, disclosed this during an appearance on The Morning Brief, a breakfast programme on Channels Television, noting that security operatives have taken control of the situation while investigations into the attacks continue.
He stated that joint security forces remain actively engaged in operations across the state, with ongoing efforts to secure affected areas and uncover those responsible for the incidents.
The coordinated explosions, suspected to have been carried out by suicide bombers, targeted a busy market, the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and a post office area in Maiduguri. The attacks reportedly claimed no fewer than 23 lives, while more than 100 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
In response to the incident, Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed security chiefs to immediately relocate to Maiduguri to coordinate operations and restore order. The President described the attacks as desperate attempts by criminal elements to instil fear among residents.
State governors across the country also condemned the bombings, describing them as a tragic and senseless loss of lives. The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, expressed condolences to the people and government of Borno State and reaffirmed the commitment of governors to work with the Federal Government in tackling insecurity.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, visited victims receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas. He assured residents of intensified efforts to dismantle terrorist networks responsible for the attacks.
Reports also indicated that some victims were caught in a secondary explosion near the post office shortly after escaping the initial blast, further compounding the impact of the incident.
