“Illegal & Unconstitutional!” ADC Blasts El-Rufai’s Detention.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly condemned the continued detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, labeling it a violation of fundamental human rights. In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party claimed that El-Rufai has been held by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for over 30 days without formal charges.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Describing the detention as illegal and unconstitutional, the ADC alleged that authorities are attempting to pressure El-Rufai into abandoning his political affiliations. The party called on the ICPC to either release him immediately or arraign him in court, warning that prolonged detention without due process undermines constitutional guarantees, including the right to liberty, fair hearing, and political participation.
The ADC further claimed that El-Rufai has been denied adequate access to his family and medical care, framing the detention as a tactic to suppress political engagement. “This is not law enforcement. This is the weaponisation of state institutions against political participation,” the statement said.
The party warned that it would escalate the matter to international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, if the situation persists. It emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic principles are threatened by what it described as selective justice and abuse of power, challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to uphold the rule of law.
ADC also called on the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and ICPC leadership to comply with constitutional provisions, stressing that institutions like the ICPC exist to combat corruption, not to serve political ends. “We demand the immediate release of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, or his immediate arraignment in a court of competent jurisdiction. Nothing more. Nothing less,” the statement concluded.
The party urged Nigerians to defend democratic values, stressing that the protection of constitutional rights is essential to sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.
