According to Nivo News, the encounter began on a cautious note, with both sides creating chances but failing to convert in the opening half. Rivers United, who had been looking to extend their lead at the summit, found it difficult to penetrate Ikorodu City’s well-organized defensive setup before the break.
The breakthrough came early in the second half when substitute Folarin Temitope made an instant impact. The forward capitalized on a rebound after goalkeeper Rashid Owolabi failed to hold onto Salami Farouk’s strike, calmly slotting the ball home to give the hosts a crucial lead.
Ikorodu City showed resilience after going ahead, absorbing intense late pressure from Rivers United to secure a vital victory. Tactical adjustments followed the goal, including the introduction of debutant Chinedu Akuvuo, as the home side reinforced their structure across midfield and attack to protect their advantage.
Rivers United made several changes in response, bringing on Iyowuna Douglas and Timothy Zachariah in a bid to salvage the match. However, despite sustained attacking pressure, they were unable to find an equalizer.
The victory moves Ikorodu City up to third place on 48 points, surpassing Nasarawa United and Shooting Stars in the race for continental qualification spots.
Rivers United remain at the top of the table with 51 points, holding a narrow lead over second-placed Enugu Rangers, who are currently on an impressive unbeaten run and closing in rapidly.
Focus now shifts to Thursday’s rescheduled fixture, where Rivers United will face Niger Tornadoes in a match that could further influence the outcome of the title race as the season intensifies after 30 games.
