EFCC Arrest: Edo Chief Denies Stealing Community Funds.

Speaking to journalists on Monday in Benin City, the traditional ruler described the claims as the work of greedy individuals within the community seeking to tarnish his reputation and that of the Okpella kingdom. Sado explained that his visit to the EFCC’s Benin zonal office was merely in response to an official invitation regarding a petition and stressed that he was neither arrested nor detained by the agency.
The monarch emphasized that his priority is the economic and social development of Okpella and condemned past practices in which community funds were controlled by a few individuals. He highlighted the community’s potential, noting that Okpella, home to major industries such as Dangote Cement and BUA Cement, should not be considered underdeveloped.
Sado also disclosed that within seven months of his reign, numerous projects valued in the billions of naira have been initiated or awarded, with more under discussion. He reiterated the need for a centralized community bank account to ensure that funds are used transparently for the benefit of all indigenes.
The traditional council has filed a petition dated March 13, 2026, titled “Damage to our reputation, resulting in bodily injury and psychological torture to members of the Okpella community,” threatening legal action against those spreading false claims. The petition, prepared by Principal Partner Lucky D. Almafumeh of Aimofumeh Law House and signed by senior village heads of the ruling house, condemned reports of the alleged arrest and fund embezzlement as damaging to the community’s image.
Recent media reports had claimed that Sado and Engr. Patrick Omkhagbo were arrested following a petition by the Ukhomuyo Council of Village Heads, alleging that the traditional leader had converted community resources into personal wealth—a claim the monarch has firmly denied.
