Court Approves 4-Year Tenure For Plateau Local Government Chairmen.
The Plateau State High Court has ruled in favor of local government chairmen, granting their request for a four-year tenure and nullifying the current two-year term specified by state laws.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Seventeen local council chairmen had challenged the state government and the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) in court, seeking an extension of their tenure from two to four years, citing a breach of the Nigerian Constitution.
In a landmark judgment on Friday, delivered by Chief Judge Justice David Gwong Mannin, the court held that the two-year tenure stipulated by state laws and PLASIEC is inconsistent with Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended).
Justice Mannin explained that the shorter tenure contradicts constitutional provisions that guarantee a democratically elected local government system. He noted that a two-year term undermines the constitutional framework for local government administration and cannot stand against the Constitution.
The court ruled that a four-year tenure aligns the positions of elected local government chairmen with constitutional requirements, ensuring democratic governance at the grassroots level.

PDP Convention Blast: Iroegbu Claims INEC Is Just An APC Branch.
Nnamdi Dickson Iroegbu, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant for the House of Representatives, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of acting as an extension of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In an interview with Arise News, Iroegbu claimed that INEC compromised its neutrality by recognising a disputed PDP convention organised by the Nyesom Wike-led faction. He described the electoral body’s decision as evidence of bias toward the ruling party.
“No, it doesn’t matter. INEC has already shown that it is a branch of the APC and the ruling government,” he stated.
Iroegbu further alleged that the commission’s handling of internal party disputes reflects a pattern of partisanship. “INEC has shown that it is partisan, this INEC,” he added.
He argued that recognising the convention ignored ongoing legal disputes and the internal decisions of the party. “By the time we went to court, INEC called for a meeting after the party had already decided that certain members had been expelled,” he explained.
The PDP aspirant maintained that the convention itself lacks legal validity, claiming that the process leading to it was flawed from the start. “That convention has no legality whatsoever because, in the eyes of the law, the foundation on which they started does not exist,” he said.
Iroegbu warned that INEC’s actions could have serious consequences for Nigeria’s democracy if unchecked. “They should be careful because what they are doing is dangerous. If people feel justice cannot be obtained, what will they do—revolt?” he asked.
He reaffirmed that his faction of the PDP would continue to pursue legal avenues to secure legitimacy. “That is why we are going through the legal means to ensure that we get legitimacy,” Iroegbu concluded.

Northern Governors Throw Support Behind Tinubu On Security And Development Agenda.
Governors of the 19 northern states, under the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NGF), on Monday, March 30, reaffirmed their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in addressing insecurity and promoting development across the region.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The decision was reached during a meeting at the Gombe State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja, chaired by Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya, who also signed the communiqué issued at the end of the deliberations.
The governors emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies to tackle evolving security threats across northern Nigeria.
“The Forum acknowledges and commends the unified efforts of member states in addressing the numerous security and developmental challenges facing the region, noting that these efforts are already producing positive outcomes. Furthermore, the Forum reaffirms its resolute commitment to maintaining and enhancing these collaborative actions to build upon the progress achieved,” the communiqué stated.
They also urged Nigerians to support the armed forces and other security agencies in their efforts to restore peace and stability.
Beyond security, the forum highlighted plans to strengthen internal structures through institutional reforms aimed at improving coordination and policy implementation. The governors announced support for the digitization of the forum’s secretariat to enhance efficiency, continuity, and service delivery.
On economic matters, the forum resolved to engage consultants to explore strategies for boosting internally generated revenue (IGR) across the region. This initiative will involve identifying and harnessing untapped taxable sources to improve financial sustainability among northern states.
The governors also pledged to continue engaging with the Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer to facilitate the establishment of the New Nigeria Energy Company under the Sun Africa Project, which is expected to increase energy capacity and support regional economic growth.
The meeting comes amid persistent security challenges in northern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnappings, and insurgency continue to threaten lives and livelihoods. In Kaduna State, a recent bandit attack in Kagarko Local Government disrupted a wedding in Kahir village, leaving at least 13 people dead and several abducted. Similarly, in Plateau State, a deadly shooting in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, claimed several lives.
Governors in the region have repeatedly called for enhanced collaboration with security agencies and greater federal intervention to address ongoing insecurity. The Tinubu administration has maintained that it is prioritizing security sector reforms and economic revitalization, including efforts to improve energy supply and increase revenue generation nationwide.
The meeting was adjourned to a later date, with governors expected to reconvene to review progress on the resolutions and ongoing interventions.
