Nigeria’s Economy Stronger Now, Can Withstand Global Shocks – Cardoso.

Published

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, stated on Thursday that Nigeria’s ongoing macroeconomic reforms have strengthened the country’s economy, enabling it to withstand potential shocks from rising tensions in the Middle East.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Cardoso made the remarks while delivering a Distinguished Alumni Lecture during the Founders’ Day celebration at St Gregory’s College.

He highlighted that the global economy is currently facing renewed uncertainties, largely driven by geopolitical tensions, particularly the ongoing crisis involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

According to the governor, these developments could lead to higher energy prices, disruptions in global supply chains, and increased risk aversion among international investors.

Despite these challenges, Cardoso emphasized that economic reforms implemented over the past two years have bolstered Nigeria’s macroeconomic buffers, placing the country in a stronger position to absorb external shocks.

He stated, “Today, the global economy is facing renewed shocks, including continued geopolitical tensions and developments in the US–Israel–Iran conflict. These events have the potential to push energy prices higher, disrupt supply chains, and increase risk aversion among global investors.

“But the macroeconomic reforms and policy buffers we have built over the past two years have placed Nigeria in a far stronger position to navigate these challenges. The storms may come, but our house will stand firm.”

Cardoso also highlighted improvements in the country’s foreign exchange market, noting that policy reforms by the central bank have made it more liquid and efficient.

“Deliberate measures implemented by the bank have eliminated distortions in the forex market and restored investor confidence. Today, the foreign exchange market operates with far greater liquidity and efficiency, while the backlog of unmet demand has been cleared. Market participants can now transact without relying on extraordinary Central Bank interventions,” he said.

Additionally, Cardoso pointed out that Nigeria has seen a notable increase in capital inflows in recent years as investor confidence gradually returns. He added that the country’s external reserves have strengthened, recently surpassing $50 billion—the highest level in over a decade—supported by an improved balance of payments and rising foreign investments.
