Yusuf Warns Removing Certificate Forgery From Election Petitions Could Threaten Democracy....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Faruk Yusuf, state coordinator of the Maiyaki Initiative for Humanitarian Support, has raised concerns over the recent amendment to the Electoral Act 2026, which removes certificate forgery as a ground for filing election petitions.

In an exclusive interview with DAILY POST, Yusuf warned that the change could undermine accountability and compromise the integrity of those seeking public office under the new framework.

“I’m particularly concerned about the accountability and integrity of individuals coming into power with this constitutional amendment,” he said.

Yusuf explained that election tribunals previously had the power to nullify elections if a candidate submitted forged academic certificates, a tool that helped ensure responsible leadership.

“Removing certificate forgery as a ground for petitions could weaken leadership accountability. Previously, tribunals could nullify elections if forged certificates were proven,” he said.

He added that the new law could create a troubling precedent, potentially encouraging the use of fraudulent documents.

“With this amendment, the system looks concerning, as it could incentivize the use of forged papers,” Yusuf said.

The lecturer also noted that excluding certificate forgery from petitions could make it harder to challenge the qualifications of elected officials, thereby eroding public trust in democratic institutions.

“Transparency and ethical leadership are central to democracy. Policies that reduce scrutiny of candidates’ qualifications risk weakening democratic standards, especially in a system where credibility is already fragile,” he emphasized.

While acknowledging that the amendment may have been intended to simplify election litigation, Yusuf argued it raises serious questions about accountability and the integrity of political leadership.

“The change may simplify litigation, but it favors politicians at the expense of democratic accountability,” he said.

He added that the long-term effects will largely depend on how the courts interpret the law and whether future reforms address the gaps created by the amendment.

“The ultimate impact will depend on judicial interpretation and whether future reforms fill these gaps,” Yusuf noted.

Concluding, he warned that the amendment weakens the accountability framework within Nigeria’s political system and could pose serious threats to democracy if left unaddressed.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
