The Taraba State Government has reiterated its enforcement of the “No Work, No Pay” policy for striking staff at the State University, Jalingo, amid the ongoing industrial action.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a notice issued on Wednesday to the Vice Chancellor and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch at the university, the government cited Section 43 of the Trade Union Disputes Act, which states that employers, including government institutions, are not required to pay wages to employees who participate in strikes.

The statement, signed by the Commissioner for Tertiary Institutions, Mike Dio, emphasized that workers who withdraw their services during the strike are not entitled to salaries for the duration of the industrial action. It also clarified that the strike period will not count toward pensionable service.

The government noted that the reminder was necessary after repeated negotiations and mediation efforts failed to convince the unions to resume academic activities.

“As negotiations and mediation have not produced the desired outcome for the striking university unions to return to work, the government is compelled to invoke the relevant provisions of the Act,” the notice stated.

While maintaining its firm position, the government appealed to the unions to reconsider the strike in the interest of students and the academic community. Authorities stressed that suspending the industrial action would help restore academic operations and prevent further disruption to the university calendar.

The notice concluded with assurances of goodwill from the state government and urged union leaders to cooperate in resolving the dispute and reopening the university for normal academic activities.

The ongoing strike, according to DAILY POST, continues to disrupt academic programs, leaving students uncertain about when lectures and other activities will resume.
