Onigbinde, a revered tactician who led Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan, passed away on Monday evening.
Describing his death as a significant loss, Sanwo-Olu said the Modakeke-born football icon left an enduring legacy in Nigerian football.
In a statement released Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor said:
“The death of Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde is a painful loss to the nation. Nigeria has lost a legend and national icon. He was among the finest Nigerian coaches in football history, a highly respected tactician, and served as a CAF and FIFA Technical Instructor for many years.
Chief Onigbinde served the country passionately as coach of the Green Eagles from 1982 to 1984, guiding Nigeria to the final of the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations. In the same year, he also coached Shooting Stars Sports Club in Ibadan to the final of the Africa Club Champions Cup. He was later recalled to lead the Super Eagles during the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
He was a revered football leader who made lasting contributions to the game. His absence will be deeply felt. I urge his family, friends, colleagues, and fans to accept his passing as the will of God.
I pray for the eternal peace of Chief Adegboye Onigbinde and for strength for his family, friends, and football supporters to bear this great loss.”
Onigbinde also served as Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation and worked with the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association as Technical Adviser for youth teams. He spent years contributing to football development across Africa as a CAF technical adviser and a member of FIFA technical study groups at major tournaments.
Beginning his coaching career in the 1960s, Onigbinde rose to prominence in 1977 when he guided Water Corporation FC of Ibadan to the quarter-finals of the African Champions Cup. His reputation was further solidified in 1984 after leading Shooting Stars Sports Club to the continental final.
As a respected mentor of the game, he became the first indigenous coach to lead Nigeria’s senior national team to a medal at the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where the Green Eagles finished as runners-up with a young squad.
Nearly two decades later, he returned to the national setup, becoming the first indigenous coach to manage Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup in 2002. Nigeria narrowly lost to Argentina and Sweden and drew with England during the tournament.
After retiring from active coaching, Onigbinde continued shaping football in Africa, mentoring coaches and administrators through the NFF, CAF, and FIFA.
