Tectonic Shifts in Politics: Atiku’s Shock Move Reignites 2027 Opposition Calculations”
Nigeria’s political scene was thrown into fresh turmoil on Wednesday following the resignation of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku’s exit has triggered widespread speculation about potential realignments ahead of the 2027 presidential race, with many observers already envisioning a possible grand alliance involving Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
In his resignation letter, dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman in his Jada 1 Ward, Adamawa State, Atiku cited “irreconcilable differences” and what he described as the party’s departure from its founding principles.
“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” the former vice president wrote.
A day earlier, in a statement that circulated widely in political circles, Atiku reflected on his decision:
“As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.”
His resignation has revived the longstanding debate over whether Nigeria’s opposition figures can finally unite—a feat that proved elusive in the run‑up to the 2023 elections, despite extensive behind‑the‑scenes talks among Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso. With Atiku now politically unbound, analysts say the prospects for a coalition are more real than ever, setting the stage for what could be an intense showdown with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Whether these power brokers can set aside personal ambitions to form a single front—or once again get bogged down in disputes over who should lead—remains to be seen.
The history of these alliance efforts is riddled with tension and denials. On December 30, 2024, PUNCH Online reported that Kwankwaso had dismissed claims of a secret rotational presidency pact involving himself, Atiku, and Obi. Speaking to BBC Hausa, the former Kano governor said:
“I heard from a source that the PDP brought in scholars—about 45 of them—and claimed there was a consensus that Atiku would rule for four years, I would rule for another four, and Peter Obi for eight. This is a complete lie with no basis in reality.”
Kwankwaso blamed such “falsehoods” for destabilising the PDP and prompting his departure.
On April 26, 2025, PINCH Online reported Atiku’s sharp criticism of the Tinubu administration for failing Nigerians and his defence of political freedom of association.
“When PDP leaders are busy sipping tea and brokering power deals with President Tinubu, it’s called a strategic alliance. But the moment I greet Peter Obi, El‑Rufai, or visit Buhari, it becomes a national emergency. Hypocrisy and the politics of selective outrage have never been this fashionable,” he said.
Meanwhile, sources revealed that the NNPP is actively considering its options for 2027. According to insiders, the party is unlikely to run independently and is weighing either an alignment with the APC or a coalition with Atiku’s emerging movement. This was later confirmed by NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, who admitted that “three basic options are on the table.”
Past attempts at forging alliances have often stalled despite shared visions. In an Arise TV presidential town hall on December 5, 2022, Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso all pledged to boost investments in education and healthcare and address issues like incessant strikes and failing infrastructure. Yet, those common goals never translated into a formal merger.
Similarly, PUNCH reported on August 22, 2023, that Labour Party National Secretary Umar Farouk and Obi’s media aide Tai Obasi denied any ongoing merger talks at the time.
Now, with Atiku’s dramatic departure from the PDP, Nigeria’s opposition politics is once again at a crossroads—one that could either redefine the 2027 election or repeat history’s cycle of fragmented ambitions.
