“Army Detains Major Over Alleged Retreat During Boko Haram Clash”.

Published

The Nigerian Army has reportedly detained Major Shamsudeen Sani, a frontline officer with years of experience fighting Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents in northeastern Nigeria, keeping him in solitary confinement for several months.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to sources, Major Sani was arrested after allegedly withdrawing his troops from a position under heavy insurgent attack to prevent casualties and await reinforcements. The officer, a native of Jalingo in Taraba State, has been held incommunicado in Maiduguri, with no access to family or legal counsel.

A security source told SaharaReporters on Tuesday that Major Sani’s decision to retreat tactically during the operation prompted military authorities to accuse him of abandoning or overrunning his post, resulting in prolonged detention under strict conditions.

“He is a dedicated officer who has spent most of his career in volatile areas of Maiduguri fighting Boko Haram and ISWAP,” the source said. “He joined the Nigerian Army Short Service Course in 2012 and has always been posted to frontline combat zones.”

The source questioned whether tactical withdrawals in combat should be considered a punishable offense. “Is it a crime to withdraw from a position to regroup or wait for reinforcement?” he asked.

Major Sani has been denied contact with his two wives and children since his arrest. “All his family members and even his lawyers have been denied access, despite his efforts to protect his troops,” the source added.

Colleagues and friends have expressed concern over the officer’s treatment, warning that such harsh measures could demoralize soldiers on the frontline. “The Nigerian Army is making military service feel like a death sentence rather than an honorable sacrifice for the nation,” the source said.

The detention has also raised fears of unfair punishment for officers making decisions intended to save lives. “If the Army doesn’t want him, they should dismiss him so he can return home to his family. We still love him,” the source said.

The Nigerian Army has yet to publicly comment on Major Sani’s detention or the allegations that he has been held without access to legal representation or family members.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
