Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, stated that the operation was launched following credible intelligence about suspicious criminal activity near Buoy 12 along the strategic Ibaka–Calabar corridor.

Gunboats from the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) Ibaka were quickly deployed to intercept the suspects and restore security in the area.

“Upon arrival, the naval patrol team encountered suspected sea robbers who had seized control of a fibre passenger boat carrying civilians from Ibaka, Akwa Ibom State, to Bakassi in Cameroon,” Folorunsho said.

The criminals had reportedly held the passengers hostage with plans to abduct them into nearby creeks. The naval team engaged the assailants, forcing them to flee into shallow waters, while safely rescuing all passengers and securing the vessel.

“All 16 passengers were rescued safely, confirmed unharmed, and in good health,” he added. For added safety, the Navy escorted the rescued passengers to the Nigeria–Cameroon maritime border.

Folorunsho emphasized that the operation demonstrates the Navy’s ongoing commitment to securing Nigeria’s maritime environment, in line with the vision of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, to build a modern and agile force capable of safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests.

He reiterated the Navy’s dedication to combating maritime crime, protecting lives and property at sea, and ensuring safe waters for commercial and economic activities.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
