IWD: Rights On Paper Must Lead To Justice For Women – Iyabo Obasanjo.

In a statement on Sunday marking International Women’s Day, Obasanjo emphasized that progress for women must extend beyond policies and promises to tangible change in society.

“Fellow Ogun women, today we join millions around the world to celebrate International Women’s Day,” she said. “This year’s theme, ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,’ is a powerful call to move beyond promises and toward real results.”

She noted that although many countries have legal frameworks to protect women, the reality often falls short of these commitments.

“We live in a time when most nations have laws on paper that protect women. We have policies for equal pay, laws against discrimination, and quotas for representation. Yet a right on paper is not the same as justice in practice in our country,” she said.

Obasanjo stressed that justice should be reflected in women’s daily experiences across professional, social, and institutional spaces.

“Justice is when a woman can enter a courtroom, boardroom, or doctor’s office and be recognized as a full and equal human being. It bridges the gap between law and lived reality. But justice doesn’t happen by chance—it requires deliberate action,” she said.

She added that meaningful progress demands confronting subtle discrimination and investing in the wellbeing of women and girls.

“Action means challenging the quiet biases in our offices. It means investing in the health and safety of girls everywhere, not just where it is convenient. When we invest in women, the entire community benefits,” she said.

Obasanjo also rejected the idea that women work against one another, expressing confidence in the support of women around her.

“I do not believe that women are women’s greatest enemies. On the contrary, I see women as my strongest supporters. I have been mentored and inspired by formidable women—from my mother and grandmother to teachers and advisors,” she said.

She highlighted that greater female representation in leadership would inspire younger generations.

“If elected the first female governor in Nigeria, it would show what is possible for women and motivate girls to dream bigger,” she said, urging women to unite in creating a future with greater opportunities and equality.

Obasanjo concluded by calling for collective efforts to ensure that women play a stronger role in shaping Nigeria’s future.
