The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Nigeria, Gholamreza Ahdavi Raja, has criticised United States President Donald Trump over remarks suggesting he would have a role in deciding Iran’s leadership after the reported death of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during Saturday’s attack.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Raja stressed that Iran would determine its leadership and political direction independently, without foreign interference.

He maintained that the country would not allow any external influence in its internal affairs.

“The United States is always interfering in our domestic issues. We are an independent country. We will not let the United States interfere in our domestic affairs,” he said.

The ambassador’s reaction followed Trump’s comments after confirmation of the Supreme Leader’s death.

Raja also referenced Article 51 of the UN Charter, affirming Iran’s right to self-defence.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, has the inherent and legitimate right to defend itself against armed aggression. Iran’s defensive measures are exercised strictly within this legal and rightful framework,” he stated.

He further pointed to damage to civilian facilities, including schools and hospitals, which he said were affected during the attacks, describing the incidents as violations of international humanitarian law.

“Let me state clearly: targeting children in a school is not a wartime accident; it is an unmistakable war crime,” he added.

Raja also noted that the attacks occurred while Iran was involved in diplomatic discussions with the United States.

“At the time these attacks occurred, Iran was actively engaged in diplomatic negotiations with the United States. Yet, once again, the United States chose to carry out a military attack in the midst of an ongoing diplomatic process,” he said.

While reiterating that Iran desires peace and stability in the region, the envoy maintained that the country would firmly protect its sovereignty.

“We are committed to defending ourselves, and we will do all that we can, but Iran is not a country seeking war. We are seeking peace and stability for the region,” he said.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
