Uncertainty Looms Over Makoko, Sogunro Residents After Lagos Assembly Panel Concludes Demolition Hearings....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Residents of Makoko, Sogunro, and Oko-Agbon communities in Lagos are facing growing anxiety following the conclusion of deliberations by an ad-hoc committee of the Lagos State House of Assembly investigating the demolition of structures in the affected areas.

The committee, established by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, wrapped up its assignment on Thursday, March 5, 2026, after receiving submissions from representatives of the three communities.

According to Naija News, stakeholders presented differing views on compensation and relocation for those displaced by the demolitions.

The Alase of the Egun Community in Makoko, Francis Agoyon, called for permanent relocation of affected residents rather than financial compensation, arguing that relocation would provide a more sustainable solution. The Baale of Makoko echoed this view, stressing that many residents would prefer a new location over monetary payouts but urged the state government to clearly identify relocation sites and define the boundaries of the demolition exercise.

In contrast, Sogunro community representatives insisted on financial compensation, suggesting ₦10 million per displaced person, noting that the average cost of constructing a bamboo house in the area is about ₦4 million. The Vice Chairman of the Fishermen Association, Tobi, said the uncertainty has created tension within the communities, adding, “The people are anxious about what lies ahead.” He noted that traditional leaders would ultimately play a key role in deciding the next steps.

Reacting to the submissions, House Majority Leader Hon. Noheem Adams expressed concern over the shifting positions of community representatives, recalling that the communities initially agreed on compensation but later revised their stance. He described the change as a setback to efforts aimed at resolving the matter. Adams assured that the committee would compile its findings, including the varied positions of the communities, and submit a detailed report to the Speaker and the full 40-member Assembly for further consideration.

Concerns Over Reconstructed Structures

During the hearings, officials from the Lagos State Building Control Agency informed the committee that some previously demolished structures had been rebuilt. The agency requested the Assembly’s approval to remove the newly constructed buildings. Community leaders agreed that any reconstructed structures on affected sites should be demolished.

Earlier in the process, the Assembly had directed the communities to form 10-member committees including women, youths, students, and traditional leaders to address the concerns of displaced residents and facilitate resolution. These committees have since submitted their reports to the Assembly Secretariat as part of ongoing efforts to resolve disputes stemming from the demolition exercise.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
