‘Painful, Shocking’ – NSCDC Confirms Death Of Officer As Commandant Orders Probe/

The incident occurred at the Corps’ National Headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory while preparations were underway for the 2026 World Civil Defence Day celebration. The exercise, conducted by the NSCDC Female Strike Force, simulated a rescue operation involving kidnapped schoolchildren as part of the Corps’ emergency preparedness demonstrations.

Officials reported that Officer Victoria sustained severe injuries during the drill and was immediately transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she was pronounced dead.

Commandant General of the NSCDC, Ahmed Audi, described the loss as “painful and shocking” for the Corps. He extended heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family, colleagues, and all personnel nationwide.

Audi instructed a senior delegation from NSCDC headquarters to visit the bereaved family to convey the organisation’s sympathy and support. He also assured that the Corps would provide a befitting burial and ensure all entitled service benefits are paid to the family in accordance with public service regulations.

While urging personnel to remain dedicated in their duties, the Commandant General acknowledged the inherent risks of emergency response and rescue operations, describing the tragedy as a reminder of the dangers associated with tactical training exercises.

The NSCDC leadership admitted that stricter safety protocols and improved coordination could have prevented the accident. Officers and personnel have been advised to rigorously follow operational safety standards in future exercises, particularly during high-risk drills.

Authorities confirmed that internal investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident and to implement measures to prevent a recurrence.

The Corps reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing workplace safety while continuing its mission to protect lives and critical national infrastructure across Nigeria.

The exam, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), will run from April 16 to April 22 in multiple daily sessions.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, urged examination officials to remain highly committed and professional, noting that the success of the exercise depends largely on their dedication.

He gave the charge during a virtual final briefing for technical officers ahead of the examination, where he also praised staff, ad hoc personnel, service providers, and technical advisers for their roles in the successful conduct of the mock exam.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.

He also disclosed that biometric verification and real-time monitoring systems have been deployed to protect the integrity of the exercise.

Candidates whose biometrics cannot be verified, he added, will be rescheduled to write the exam at approved centres.

Meanwhile, a NAN correspondent monitoring proceedings at Aduvie International School, Jahi, reported that the first session scheduled for 8:30 a.m. began slightly behind schedule at about 8:40 a.m.
