In a statement on Saturday, February 28, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is “closely monitoring the evolving and volatile situation in the Middle East, particularly the military actions reportedly carried out by Israel and the United States against targets in Iran and the subsequent retaliatory strikes by Iran on certain Gulf countries.”

Signed by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the advisory called on Nigerians in the affected areas to remain alert.

“All Nigerians in Iran and impacted Gulf states are advised to be extremely vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times. Avoid strategic, military, or government sites, as these may be potential flashpoints,” the statement read.

The ministry also recommended limiting movement. “Nigerians should restrict non-essential travel within these countries until the security situation stabilizes. Avoid large gatherings and public demonstrations.”

Citizens were further urged to follow instructions from local authorities. “It is crucial to comply with all security directives issued by local officials to ensure your safety. Cooperation with local law enforcement is essential.”

The government confirmed that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran, along with missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, are on high alert to assist citizens and maintain communication.

“The safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens abroad remains a top priority for the Federal Government,” the ministry stated, adding that it will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as needed.

The advisory also called for calm, urging all parties involved to “de-escalate the crisis and return to the negotiation table for the sake of global peace and coexistence.”

The warning comes after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iranian cities on Saturday, with explosions reported in Tehran and plumes of smoke visible across parts of the capital.

US President Donald Trump said the military operations aimed to “eliminate imminent threats” from Iran. In a video message, he stated, “The United States’ military began major combat operations in Iran. We will destroy their missiles and their missile industry, and completely neutralize their navy.”

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz described the attack as a “preventive strike.”

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
