Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Friday stated that millions of Nigerians are switching political parties out of necessity, prioritizing survival over ideology.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The statement, issued by his media office, came in response to the defection of Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Atiku criticized the increasing trend of opposition governors joining the ruling party.

He argued that these defections reflect pressure and political intimidation rather than genuine support, alleging that the Bola Tinubu administration is using state institutions to suppress rivals and push the country toward a one-party system.

Atiku stressed that such intimidation cannot mask the harsh economic realities facing Nigerians, including rising food prices, worsening poverty, deteriorating security, and widespread unemployment—issues he attributes to poor economic management.

“While some governors may switch parties to protect their own interests, ordinary Nigerians are changing political camps because they are fighting to stay afloat. Governors may defect for personal survival. Nigerians are defecting in their millions because they want survival,” he said.

He also warned citizens against equating defections with popularity, questioning what the APC would campaign on in 2027. “What will the APC campaign on — hunger? hardship? hopelessness?” he asked.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.
