The African Democratic Congress (ADC) leader urged all opposition parties to unite in blocking the plan and protecting Nigeria’s democracy.

Atiku made the comments on Thursday in a statement following a joint press conference in Abuja, where opposition leaders formally rejected the amended 2026 Electoral Act recently signed by President Bola Tinubu.

He described the law as offensive, anti-democratic, and a deliberate attempt by the APC-led National Assembly to compromise electoral transparency and the integrity of elections.

In his statement, Atiku said:

“This afternoon, I joined other leaders of Nigeria’s main opposition parties at a Joint Press Conference in Abuja. We rejected the 2026 Electoral Act hastily signed into law by the Bola Tinubu-led APC administration. We called for its reenactment to reflect the aspirations and wishes of Nigerians.

“I fully support Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, National Chairman of the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), in rejecting section 60(3), which allows INEC to resort to manual transmission of results instead of mandatory real-time electronic reporting to the IREV portal, citing network failures in a country with over 90% Internet coverage.

“We also reject section 84(2), which imposes Direct or Consensus modes of primary elections on political parties.

“The amended 2026 Electoral Act is clearly offensive, anti-democratic, and a calculated effort by the APC-led National Assembly to undermine the transparency and sanctity of our elections.

“I called on all opposition parties to join this mission to safeguard our democracy. Now is the time to push back against any rigging plan ahead of 2027.”
