‘Politics Must Not Be Settled By Violence’ – Atiku Reacts To Attack On Peter Obi.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned Tuesday’s attack on former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and other African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders in Edo State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement personally signed by him, Atiku held the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo responsible, pointing to recent reckless and inflammatory statements by government officials. He expressed concern that politics in Nigeria is taking a dangerous turn under President Bola Tinubu, with state institutions being used to intimidate opposition figures.
Naija News reports that Atiku warned against allowing Nigeria to become a country where political disputes are resolved through violence, urging the government to uphold its duty to protect citizens’ lives and property.
“The violent attack on Peter Obi, Chief John Oyegun, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, Olumide Akpata, and other ADC leaders in Benin, Edo State, is completely condemnable and unacceptable in any democracy.
“In recent times, we have seen reckless and inflammatory rhetoric from elements within the ruling party in Edo, rhetoric that dangerously normalises violence against political opponents. Words, when weaponised, often precede action. What happened in Benin did not occur in isolation.
“Nigeria is entering a perilous phase in which opposition voices are not only harassed through state institutions but are now being physically targeted. The ruling APC appears to have escalated from bureaucratic suppression to outright aggression.
“President Bola Tinubu and the nation’s security chiefs have a constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property without discrimination or partisanship. The safety of opposition leaders and their supporters is not a privilege—it is a democratic obligation.
“Nigeria must not descend into a system where politics is settled through violence,” Atiku concluded.
