The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reportedly resigned following a request by President Bola Tinubu, according to sources within the Presidency.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A source disclosed that Egbetokun was asked to step down during a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

He is expected to be succeeded by Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police.

Although no official statement had been issued at the time of filing this report, sources at the Presidency and Force Headquarters indicated that arrangements were being made for a formal handover ceremony, with an announcement anticipated later on Tuesday.

Efforts to reach the presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, and the Force Public Relations Officer, Ben Hundeyin, were unsuccessful.

Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, and his appointment was later confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.

Initially appointed at age 58, he was due for retirement on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, an amendment to the Police Act by the National Assembly allowed him to serve a fixed four-year tenure as IGP unless removed by the President.

The Presidency had previously defended his continued stay in office, citing provisions of the amended Police Act 2024, which permits an appointed IGP to complete a four-year term irrespective of age or years of service.

Egbetokun’s tenure faced criticism and controversy, including allegations of human rights violations and public backlash over the extension of his service. Despite concerns raised by civil society groups and members of the public, the Presidency had consistently maintained that his position was lawful.

Tunji Disu is expected to formally assume office following the handover.

In a related development, senior police sources and officials of the Police Service Commission also confirmed that Egbetokun has been directed to transfer authority to Disu, who currently oversees the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.

One source revealed that Egbetokun was summoned to the Presidential Villa and instructed to begin preparing his handover notes.

Another source alleged that the President advised him to step aside to focus on his health, citing concerns over medical issues.

Reports further indicated that news of his removal was met with celebration among some police officers. Another source claimed that while First Lady Remi Tinubu reportedly preferred that he remain in office, the President insisted on the change despite the controversies surrounding his tenure.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
