“It Could Have Been Avoided” – Fayemi Speaks On Mining Site Tragedy That Claimed 37 Lives.
Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has extended his sympathies to the families of the 37 miners who lost their lives at a mining site in Plateau State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Thirty-seven miners reportedly died after inhaling carbon monoxide while working in an underground mine in Zurak, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State last week. More than 25 others were hospitalised following the incident, prompting the Federal Government to order the site’s closure.
In a statement posted on on Sunday, Fayemi, who served as Minister of Solid Minerals Development between 2015 and 2018 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, revealed that the same mining location had been shut during his tenure.
He expressed regret that the disaster might have been prevented if the earlier closure had remained in force.
Fayemi disclosed that he visited the Zurak mining site in 2017 alongside then National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno.
According to him, the visit led to the immediate suspension of operations and the arrest of illegal Chinese miners operating at the site.
He further stated that the alleged owner of the mining operation, identified as “Alhaji Dan China,” was declared wanted by security agencies, apprehended, and later released after he left office.
Fayemi said, “As minister of mines, I visited the mines with the NSA and the governor following numerous complaints from the community.
“We placed an embargo on mining activities at the site, arrested the illegal Chinese operators, and declared the purported owner of the illegal lead and zinc mines, Alhaji Dan China, wanted.
“He was eventually apprehended and brought to book by the National Security Adviser but was released after I left office.
“My preliminary discussions with officials of the Ministry, as well as with the former Deputy Speaker and Wase representative in the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Idris Wase, indicate that this tragedy occurred at the same mine.
“It could have been avoided if security agencies had sustained the measures taken by the Ministry in 2017.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the families of the deceased. The government must now take firm and decisive action against operators who flout mining and environmental regulations, irrespective of whose interests are involved. Mining activities must not endanger host communities.”
