Trump Raises Global Tariff To 15% After Supreme Court Setback.

Published

United States President Donald Trump on Saturday announced an increase in global import tariffs to 15 per cent, intensifying his aggressive trade policy just a day after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled much of his trade agenda unconstitutional.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The move marks a sharp escalation in Washington’s trade stance and signals potential prolonged legal and diplomatic disputes.

In a 6-3 decision on Friday, the Supreme Court struck down Trump’s use of a 1977 economic emergency powers law to impose sweeping tariffs, delivering one of the most significant judicial setbacks for the president since his return to office 13 months ago. The ruling invalidated the signature tariff policy that has disrupted global markets and reshaped trade relations.

Trump responded quickly on his Truth Social platform, calling the judgment an “extraordinarily anti-American decision” and announcing that, after review, his administration would raise global import levies “to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level.”

Earlier, following the court’s ruling, Trump had invoked an alternative legal provision to impose a 10 per cent global levy. Saturday’s adjustment increased that rate to 15 per cent.

Political Fallout and Judicial Criticism
The announcement sparked immediate political reactions. Some Republicans publicly criticized the conservative justices who sided with the majority, accusing them of “disloyalty” and labeling them “fools and lap dogs.”

Trump, in contrast, praised the three conservative justices who supported his authority—Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Brett Kavanaugh—thanking them “for their strength and wisdom, and love of our country.”

The president further alleged that the six-member majority, including two justices he nominated during his first term, had been “swayed by foreign interests.” “I think that foreign interests are represented by people that I believe have undue influence,” he claimed.

Global Reactions
Trump’s announcement has stirred uncertainty in international trade circles, with several countries reviewing both the Supreme Court ruling and the White House’s response.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva urged the United States to prioritize fairness over confrontation. “We don’t want a new Cold War. We don’t want interference in any other country; we want all countries to be treated equally,” Lula said in New Delhi.

In Europe, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced plans to consult with EU allies to develop “a very clear European position” ahead of a visit to Washington scheduled for early March.

Within the US, criticism also emerged. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, called on Trump to respect the court’s decision. “It’s time for Trump to listen to the Supreme Court, end chaotic tariffs, and stop wreaking havoc on our farmers, small business owners, and families,” he wrote on .

Business groups, however, welcomed the ruling. The National Retail Federation said it “provides much-needed certainty” for companies navigating unpredictable trade policies. Wall Street shares, closely monitored by the president, rose modestly following the ruling.

Temporary Measure and Future Legal Battles
According to a White House fact sheet, the newly announced 15 per cent global tariff is temporary and legally permissible for 150 days. Exemptions remain for sectors under separate investigations, including pharmaceuticals, and for goods covered under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Trump’s sector-specific duties on steel, aluminum, and other products remain unaffected by the Supreme Court ruling. Ongoing investigations could result in additional targeted tariffs, and trading partners with prior negotiated deals would also be subject to the new global levy.

During court arguments, the administration indicated that companies could receive refunds if the tariffs were ultimately deemed unlawful, though the Supreme Court did not rule on this issue. Trump acknowledged that the matter could be tied up in litigation for years, with Justice Kavanaugh warning that any refund process could become a “mess.”

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.

When Akpan sought the court’s permission to adopt his client’s processes, Justice Abdulmalik informed him that the documents had already been deemed adopted.

The judge subsequently adjourned the matter until December 2, 2026, when judgment is expected to be delivered.
