Bashir Ahmad Sounds Alarm Over 2027 Elections, Explains Low Voter Turnout In FCT, Kano, Rivers

Published

Former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, has attributed the low voter turnout recorded in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council elections and the by-elections in Rivers and Kano states to the ongoing Ramadan fast.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to him, many Muslims typically limit their movements during fasting hours and devote more time to spiritual activities, a factor he believes impacted participation across several polling units during the Saturday, February 21 polls.

Ahmad therefore renewed calls for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider the timetable for the 2027 general elections, which is currently slated to take place during the Ramadan period.

It would be recalled that INEC recently unveiled the schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections. Under the timetable released on Friday, February 13, 2026, Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while Governorship and State Assembly elections are fixed for March 6, 2027.

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, announced the dates during a press briefing in Abuja.

Reacting to the outcome of Saturday’s elections, Ahmad emphasized that election scheduling remains a delicate matter that should take into account inclusivity and broad citizen participation.

He stated that the timing of the FCT council elections within the holy month of Ramadan significantly contributed to voter apathy, noting that the period is characterized by altered daily routines, reduced physical activity during fasting hours, and heightened spiritual focus.

He added that several stakeholders have urged INEC to carefully reassess the already announced 2027 election dates, especially as the governorship and State/National Assembly polls are slated to hold just days before Eid el-Fitr — a period traditionally devoted to preparations, travel, family engagements, and economic activities.

While stressing that civic responsibility should not be compromised by timing, Ahmad maintained that scheduling elections with sensitivity to major religious observances would likely boost turnout, inclusiveness, and overall democratic participation.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
