Experts Warn: Sports Betting Is ‘A Silent Killer Of Nigerian Youths’.

Published

on

Nigerian youths’ growing obsession with sports betting, particularly football, has alarmed parents, community leaders, and those responsible for guiding young people into adulthood.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

While gambling has existed for centuries worldwide, its reach in Nigeria has expanded rapidly. Introduced as pool betting during colonial rule in the 1920s, it has evolved from casino games to online sports betting, now engaging students, workers, underage individuals, adults, and even women. Daily, Nigerians crowd betting centres, placing wagers on football matches, athletes, and other sporting events. Behind the jokes about cut tickets or “cashout” lies a harsh reality: lost money, lost focus, sleepless nights, and in tragic cases, lost lives.

Devastating Consequences
Data from the National Lottery Trust Fund shows about 65 million Nigerians regularly bet, spending an average of $15 per day. Many have shared stories of losing house rent, school fees, and savings to gambling. In January 2026, Kelvin Danlami, a 300-level Computer Science student at Ibrahim Babangida University, Lapai, took his own life after losing his rent money to betting. While some gamble for fun, many see it as a way to survive, yet the losses indicate it is rarely a solution. Betting has shifted from leisure to silently consuming the minds of a generation already under pressure.

From Entertainment to Survival Strategy
Babajimi Ogunlana, a FIFA-licensed agent and former Betland MD, warned of the addictive nature of sports betting among Nigerian youths. He said, “I am not anti-betting, I am anti-exploitation. Responsible gaming is key.” Ogunlana explained that unemployment, economic hardship, and Nigeria’s football culture create a perfect storm: with just ₦100 and a smartphone, youths can bet anytime, while near-miss psychology fuels the illusion that one win is just around the corner.

On regulation, he noted, “Existing laws exist, but enforcement lags behind digital betting realities. Age verification is weak, monitoring inconsistent, and cross-border platforms complicate oversight. Without loss limits, cooling-off systems, ad restrictions, and mental health support, this is a growing public health risk.”

Ogunlana also criticised celebrity promotions, saying, “When influencers market betting as a hustle or smart investment, it distorts risk perception. Highlighting winners without probability education creates unrealistic expectations and amplifies losses. Marketing must shift to transparency.”

He stressed that protecting youths requires collective action: stronger age checks, loss caps, financial literacy in schools, self-exclusion tools, addiction support funded by the industry, and safeguarding football integrity.

Reflecting on his experience, Ogunlana concluded, “Betting is not inherently evil, but unchecked betting is dangerous. The solution lies in responsible frameworks, strict enforcement, and ethical promotion. Nigeria must decide: do we want a betting economy or a betting society? These are two very different futures.”
