Reps Move Against MTN, Airtel, Glo Over Poor Network Services In Nigeria
The House of Representatives has moved to compel the chief executive officers (CEOs) of telecommunications companies to appear before it following persistent complaints about poor network services and the operators’ failure to honour an earlier invitation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The lawmakers took the decision on Wednesday after rejecting the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, who was sent to represent the companies.
The House ad hoc committee investigating the quality of telecommunications services, chaired by Olumide Osoba, directed the CEOs and other senior officials of the affected companies to appear before it on November 4, 2026.
The operators include MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, Mafab Communications and other licensed telecommunications companies.
The committee had initially invited the executives on October 21 to explain the recurring complaints from subscribers over poor network quality. However, rather than attend personally, the companies sent Adebayo as their representative.
The decision angered the lawmakers, who insisted that each telecommunications company must appear before the committee and answer questions about its operations.
Moving a motion on the matter, Rep. Sunday Umeha argued that every telecommunications operator held an individual licence issued by the Federal Government and should not rely on its membership of an industry association to avoid appearing before the lawmakers.
He also criticised a letter from ALTON which, according to him, questioned the committee’s authority to summon the operators.
“I was shocked with what I saw in the letter. I saw a situation where ALTON is saying that they are not bound to appear before this committee. They see their appearance as a privilege to this committee and not as a statutory obligation,” Umeha said.
The lawmaker cited Section 88 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, arguing that the National Assembly had the authority to investigate matters connected to its legislative responsibilities, including the implementation of government policies affecting the telecommunications sector.
He maintained that the committee had the right to demand the individual appearance of the companies’ executives instead of accepting a representative sent through their association.
A representative of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) informed the committee that the commission had directly communicated the invitations to the chief executives.
Umeha disclosed that the lawmakers had considered ordering the arrest of the executives during their previous sitting but decided to give them another opportunity to appear.
He argued that the companies had failed to take advantage of the opportunity despite additional communication through the NCC.
Supporting the motion, House spokesperson Akin Rotimi Jr. questioned ALTON’s decision to represent the operators, noting that subscribers deal directly with individual telecommunications companies when they experience poor services.
Rotimi also expressed concerns about network coverage and security challenges in parts of his constituency in Ekiti State.
He alleged that two traditional rulers in the area had been killed in an ambush along a road where mobile network signals were unavailable for approximately 20 minutes.
The lawmaker accused telecommunications operators of concentrating infrastructure in areas with greater commercial potential while leaving some communities with poor or no network coverage.
During the session, lawmakers also questioned Adebayo about a reported ₦8.46 billion fine imposed on Globacom, asking whether he was in a position to adequately respond to questions concerning the operations of individual companies.
Following the debate, committee chairman Osoba put Umeha’s motion to a voice vote, and members voted in support. The committee subsequently adjourned its sitting until November 4.
The investigation comes amid continued complaints from Nigerians over dropped calls, slow internet connections, failed airtime and data transactions, and inadequate network coverage.
On October 20, the NCC reportedly disclosed that telecommunications operators had compensated 75 million subscribers for poor services in 2026. Nearly three million other subscribers also reportedly received refunds for failed airtime and data transactions.
The commission added that it had carried out more than 6,500 network interventions during the year.
Despite these measures, the four major operators recorded a combined 413,587 consumer complaints in the first half of 2026.
Airtel accounted for 228,992 complaints, followed by MTN with 124,405, Globacom with 56,810 and T2mobile with 3,885.
The operators reportedly resolved 406,938 of the complaints, but concerns over the quality of telecommunications services have persisted.
The House committee is seeking explanations from the companies and assurances that concrete measures will be implemented to address the network problems affecting subscribers across Nigeria.

Fresh Security Measures As ICPC Plans Armed Deployment For 2027 Elections.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has disclosed that it has trained some of its personnel to carry firearms and plans to deploy them during the 2027 general elections to strengthen its monitoring operations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The commission’s Director of Public Education, Demola Bakare, made this known during a virtual National Stakeholders Workshop on the 2027 General Election.
The workshop was organised by Praxis in collaboration with the Human Resources Development Centre of the University of Lagos.
The online programme, scheduled to hold over three Thursdays in November, focuses on ways to identify, monitor and report corruption to safeguard the credibility of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during the event, Bakare said election monitoring should commence months before voting takes place.
He emphasised that election monitors must be familiar with Nigeria’s electoral and criminal laws before embarking on their assignments.
According to him, elections are vulnerable to corruption because of the intense political competition involved, while electoral fraud often flourishes when offenders believe they can act without facing punishment.
“Elections usually become corrupt because it is a political competition. Electoral fraud thrives when everyone engages in it,” he said.
Bakare maintained that prosecuting and punishing individuals found guilty of electoral offences would serve as a deterrent to others.
He noted that although elections provide citizens with the opportunity to choose their leaders and hold them accountable, the mere conduct of polls does not automatically guarantee effective democratic governance.
The ICPC official identified bribery, vote buying, abuse of public resources, intimidation, procurement fraud and manipulation of electoral records as practices capable of compromising the credibility of elections.
He warned that these offences could transform elections into instruments for protecting the interests of influential politicians instead of allowing citizens to freely determine who governs them.
Bakare also urged election monitors to remain impartial and avoid showing support for any political party or candidate.
He advised them to carry out their responsibilities within the provisions of the law while taking necessary precautions to protect themselves.
The director further stressed the importance of preserving evidence collected during monitoring exercises, explaining that such materials must be properly documented and handled to ensure they can be relied upon in court when necessary.
He added that monitors should submit reports containing specific and actionable information, follow up on their findings and forward them to the relevant authorities for appropriate action.
Referring to the 1993 presidential election, Bakare observed that its continued recognition as a benchmark in Nigeria’s electoral history demonstrates that the country can still conduct credible elections.
He urged Nigerians to play an active role in ensuring that the 2027 general elections are free, fair and transparent.
