Reps Apologise Over Tear Gas At National Assembly.
The House of Representatives on Thursday expressed regret to protesters affected by tear gas fired at the National Assembly earlier this week, describing the incident as unfortunate and assuring that the circumstances were under review.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The apology was delivered by House Spokesman Akin Rotimi during a press conference in Abuja, held to review the recently signed Electoral Act 2026. The event was organised by the Kukah Centre and Yiaga Africa in partnership with the International Press Centre, TAF Africa, Centre for Media and Society, Nigerian Women Trust Fund, and ElectHer.
The Nigerian Police faced criticism after operatives used tear gas on demonstrators who gathered at the National Assembly on Tuesday to demand mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results under the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026.
Expressing sympathy with those affected, Rotimi said, “I would like to express my sympathy to all those impacted by the tear gas incident at the National Assembly the other day. It should never have happened, and the House’s media and public affairs team is addressing it.”
He added, “Protesters attending the National Assembly are constitutionally protected, and we are reviewing the circumstances that led to this incident.”
While affirming the right to peaceful protest, the lawmaker cautioned against possible disruption by infiltrators. “We encourage that during protests, participants should discourage nefarious actors seeking to incite breakdowns of law and order. The House is intentional about public engagement,” he said.
Rotimi also defended the National Assembly’s handling of the Electoral Act review, stressing that lawmakers acted in good faith and followed constitutional procedures.
“As previously stated, throughout the review of the Electoral Act 2022 and now 2026, civil society organisations were actively involved. While some may be dissatisfied with the outcome, the public engagement process was thorough and in line with constitutional requirements,” he said.
He added, “The process was detailed and fully compliant with the Constitution and House and Senate rules. Democratisation, of which elections are a core component, is an ongoing process, and there remain opportunities to amend the Electoral Act further in the future.”
Call for Trust and INEC Simulation
Rotimi urged Nigerians not to lose confidence in the legislature despite criticisms. “We have acted in the best interest of Nigerians and call on citizens to have faith and trust in the National Assembly. The law may not be perfect, but it aims to ensure free, fair, and credible elections,” he said.
On calls for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a nationwide simulation of its result transmission system, Rotimi welcomed the suggestion. “We fully support INEC deploying a simulation to identify gaps and address them promptly,” he stated.
He also backed the immediate publication of the newly assented Electoral Act, saying, “It is important for all Nigerians to be aware of what has been passed.”
Acknowledging declining public trust in government institutions, Rotimi said, “We recognise that trust and confidence in the legislature have been low, but we will continue to work hard to rebuild it.”
The conference was part of ongoing post-legislative engagement between lawmakers and civil society groups following the passage of the Electoral Act 2026, which has sparked significant debate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.
Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.
He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.
Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.
In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
The legal notice maintained that the allegations were baseless and intended to damage the reputations of the two entertainers.
