The Nigerian military has made new arrests over an alleged plot to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Among those detained is Major H. Yusuf of the Nigerian Army, a member of the 57 Regular Course who recently completed the Senior Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji. He is reportedly in custody along with other suspects, though details of the alleged conspiracy remain unclear.

Investigations into the matter have been ongoing since 2025, but no formal trial has started. Observers have noted the limited official disclosure on the case.

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, revealed he was among senior officials targeted by the plotters. Speaking on Channels Television, Musa said he was to be arrested and shot if he resisted.

The arrests trace back to October 2025, when 16 officers were detained for alleged indiscipline and breaches of service regulations. By January 2026, further investigations reportedly linked some of them to a plan to destabilize the government. The Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, stated that suspects engaged in actions “inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards” of the Armed Forces and would be arraigned before a military judicial panel.

Sources suggest the alleged plot extended beyond the military, with reports naming top officials and prominent Nigerians as potential targets. Some have linked it to the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day parade, though this has not been officially confirmed. Former Bayelsa governor Timipre Sylva’s residence was also reportedly raided in connection to the plot, though no charges have been announced.

General Musa dismissed the plotters as lacking the capacity to challenge the military. Nigeria, which experienced military coups between 1966 and 1993, has maintained civilian rule since 1999 despite security and political challenges. The allegations come amid a wave of coup attempts across West Africa, including a reported plot in Benin last year.

Reports indicate that about 35 military personnel are currently in custody, including an Army Brigadier General, two Colonels, five Lieutenant Colonels, a Wing Commander, eight Majors, a Lieutenant Commander, two Squadron Leaders, five Captains, a Lieutenant, and 10 non-commissioned officers. A police officer, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim from Taraba State, was also arrested by the Defence Intelligence Agency.

The detainees hail from various states, including Osun, Bayelsa, Nasarawa, Niger, Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau, Kano, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Jigawa, Zamfara, Taraba, Yobe, Kogi, Sokoto, Adamawa, and the Federal Capital Territory. One detained Colonel was reportedly undergoing a course in North Africa at the time of arrest.

They are expected to be arraigned on Wednesday, April 22, before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

According to the charge, the defendants allegedly conspired in 2025 to destabilise the Nigerian state and undermine the authority of the President.

It was further alleged that they planned actions intended to “levy war against the state to overawe the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” an offence punishable under the Criminal Code.

Prosecutors also claimed the accused had prior knowledge of a planned treasonable act involving Colonel Mohammed Alhassan Ma’aji and others but failed to report it to the authorities or take steps to prevent it.

Beyond the treason allegations, they are also being prosecuted under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, for allegedly supporting and participating in activities linked to terrorism.

Two of the defendants, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim and Zekeri Umoru, were specifically accused of attending meetings allegedly connected to terrorist planning and ideological mobilisation aimed at destabilising the country’s constitutional order.

The Federal Government further alleged that the accused provided indirect support for terrorist activities and failed to disclose critical intelligence that could have prevented the alleged offences.

In addition, several of the defendants are accused of handling funds believed to be linked to terrorism financing.

Bukar Kashim Goni was alleged to have retained ₦50 million suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities, while Abdulkadir Sani was accused of holding ₦2 million from similar sources.

Zekeri Umoru was also accused of receiving and retaining ₦10 million and ₦8.8 million without passing through financial institutions, while Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim was alleged to have taken possession of ₦1 million connected to the case.

All financial allegations were filed under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The Chief of Staff also urged Abejide to disregard calls from APC members, including former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, who had reportedly encouraged him to defect to the ruling party.

“Don’t come to APC. Stay in ADC and scatter them. We like what you’re doing. Don’t mind former governor Yahaya Bello, who said you should join APC. No, no, no, stay in ADC and win your election. Also, bring Bala Gombe, and we’ll support him. Good luck in court,” he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, fresh tension has emerged within the African Democratic Congress as factional leader Nafiu Bala accused former national chairman Ralph Nwosu of misrepresenting the purpose of a recent party event.

Bala, speaking in an interview on AIT on Monday, said he was invited to what he believed was a routine meeting to welcome new members but later discovered it was used to announce a new leadership structure led by David Mark.

He explained that he only realised the full agenda after proceedings had begun, adding that the event also featured Nwosu stepping down while unveiling new party executives.

According to him, the development has deepened existing internal disputes within the party, especially with the appointment of David Mark and others into key leadership positions during the gathering.
