ASUU Resumes Indefinite Strike At Taraba Varsity Over Unfulfilled Agreement.

Published

on

The Taraba State University branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has resumed its previously suspended indefinite strike, citing the state government’s failure to implement agreements reached with the union on January 17, 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The decision was announced in a press statement signed by the union’s chairman, Joshua Garba Mbave, and shared with journalists on Wednesday in Jalingo.

According to the statement, the industrial action was reinstated due to what ASUU described as the government’s inability to take “concrete and verifiable steps” toward fulfilling its commitments.

The union noted that the strike had initially been suspended in good faith to allow the government time to address the agreed issues, but regretted that no meaningful progress had been made.

“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Taraba State University, TSU Branch, hereby informs the general public, students, parents, and all stakeholders that it has resumed its previously suspended total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action,” the statement read.

ASUU explained that its congress, held on February 18, 2026, reviewed the situation and concluded that the ongoing neglect of longstanding issues left no option but to resume the strike.

The union stressed that it had exercised patience and engaged the authorities through dialogue before taking this step.

Key issues cited for the renewed strike include the absence of a functional pension scheme, unpaid salary arrears for lecturers, and non-payment of accumulated Earned Academic Allowances.

ASUU also accused the authorities of failing to implement the newly negotiated 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement, which it said is crucial for improving staff welfare and stabilising the university system.

Mbave noted that these persistent challenges have affected staff morale, productivity, and the overall functioning of Taraba State University.

He emphasised that resuming the strike was a last resort, taken only after prolonged dialogue with the Taraba State Government failed to yield results.

The union called on all relevant stakeholders to intervene urgently to resolve the crisis and prevent further disruption to academic activities in the institution and across the state.
