Tech Expert Dismisses Senate’s Concerns Over E-Transmission.

Published

A leading technology expert, Ebenezar Wey, has rejected claims that Nigeria lacks the infrastructure to carry out real-time electronic transmission of election results.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Commenting on the debate surrounding amendments to the Electoral Act, Wey argued that no credible tech professional would deem electronic transmission impracticable.

Speaking with Vanguard, he said the Senate is aware that any competent technology expert—whether from the private sector or government—would affirm the viability of existing networks and available alternatives.

He maintained that the discussion should not be restricted to GSM coverage, noting that several other technologies can guarantee nationwide connectivity. According to him, INEC’s funding is sufficient to deploy such solutions.

Wey listed satellite systems, Starlink services, and Wide Area Networks (WAN) as viable options capable of linking polling units to a central server. He emphasized that modern systems are built with redundancy to avoid total failure, a practice common in banking and other critical sectors.

He pointed out that major banks in Nigeria operate extensive networks with backup systems—often on budgets smaller than INEC’s—ensuring uninterrupted services for millions of customers.

Questioning the resistance, he asked why similar safeguards could not be implemented for elections, which involve even fewer simultaneous users.

Wey insisted there is no technological basis for rejecting mandatory electronic transmission, suggesting that political considerations, rather than technical limitations, are driving opposition to the reform.
