Amid exchanges between the Senate and telecom operators regarding the state of telecommunications infrastructure, the commission has remained publicly silent. A senior NCC official, speaking anonymously to Vanguard, said the agency would not be drawn into political discussions.

“These are political times, and you can expect political statements. We are apolitical,” the official said, adding that telecom operators have invested enough to enable Nigeria achieve significant technological progress.

Industry data show steady growth in the telecom sector since 2021, driven by private investment and government-backed initiatives such as network optimisation and base station expansion. MTN Nigeria reportedly invested ₦565.7bn in the first half of 2025 to expand fibre-to-the-home services and rural connectivity, while Airtel Nigeria deployed about 2,300 new sites in the first quarter of the year.

Broadband penetration surpassed 50 percent, with subscriptions rising to 109.6 million as of December 2025, up from 96.3 million in 2024. The Federal Government aims to achieve 80 percent national connectivity by 2027.

Growth has also been supported by initiatives like Project Bridge, which seeks to expand fibre infrastructure from 35,000km to 125,000km, and the 774 Local Government Connectivity Programme to enhance digital services nationwide. Operators are integrating satellite broadband with fibre networks to reach remote areas and are said to have invested over $1bn in 2025 on fibre rollouts, new base stations, and 4G/5G upgrades.

Telecom firms argue that lawmakers should prioritise policy reforms rather than question infrastructure capacity. They highlighted challenges such as fibre vandalism, power issues, multiple levies, high right-of-way charges, and regulatory inconsistencies, urging stronger enforcement of critical national infrastructure protections to safeguard telecom facilities.

During a recent visit to Washington, D.C., Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), argued that the prevalence of election rigging in Nigeria is largely due to voters failing to actively defend their ballots. Obi emphasized that while candidates play a role in the process, credible outcomes ultimately depend on citizens remaining at their polling units to ensure votes are counted transparently. He criticized the “transactional” nature of Nigerian politics, suggesting that many voters prioritize other activities over the essential task of monitoring the electoral process. According to Obi, Nigeria’s primary challenge is poor political leadership, and he urged citizens to take collective ownership of their votes to demand the accountable governance required for the country to succeed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for increased citizen involvement in protecting electoral integrity. During a recent trip to Washington, D.C., Obi stated that election manipulation persists because voters frequently leave polling stations before the counting process is completed. He argued that:

  • Voters must proactively defend their ballots at polling units to ensure transparency and prevent rigging.

  • Nigeria’s fundamental obstacle is a crisis of political leadership, rather than a lack of natural or human resources.

  • Real change requires Nigerians to move beyond passive participation and take active responsibility for the electoral process.
