The assurance was given by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a public hearing and interactive session on the 2026 budget organised by the Senate Committee on Appropriations at the National Assembly, Abuja.

Represented by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, Akpabio reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to its constitutional duties of oversight, accountability and legislative support aimed at economic stabilisation and improved national welfare.

He said the upper chamber would continue to collaborate with the Executive and other stakeholders to ensure the 2026 budget is not only passed on schedule but also implemented transparently with measurable outcomes.

Describing the budget process as more than a routine exercise, Akpabio said it offers an opportunity for national self-assessment, urging lawmakers to align public spending with the country’s development goals.

He noted that Nigeria is currently facing serious economic challenges, including inflation, unemployment, infrastructure deficits and insecurity, stressing that these issues directly affect citizens’ daily lives.

Despite the challenges, he called for a shift from traditional budgeting to a results-driven approach, emphasising the need to focus on impact rather than expenditure alone.

Akpabio highlighted fiscal discipline, tax reforms, macroeconomic stability, infrastructure delivery and effective implementation as key pillars for economic recovery and growth.

He also commended the Senate Committee on Appropriations for opening the budget process to public engagement, describing it as a vital step toward transparency and democratic accountability.

Urging stakeholders and citizens to actively contribute, Akpabio said inclusive participation would strengthen governance and ensure the budget translates into tangible improvements for Nigerians.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
