Army Launches Probe Over Claims Officers Are Protecting Drug Dealers In Lagos.

The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has announced plans to investigate claims that some military officers are shielding drug traffickers in the Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The statement follows allegations by the Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, Jimoh Saliu, who accused certain senior military personnel of protecting criminals involved in drug trafficking within the area.

In a Sunday statement, Saliu said a location called Gidan Drama in the Marine Beach community, near Tego Army Barracks, had become a hotspot for illicit drug activities. He described it as a hideout for criminals, where the sale of drugs and stolen goods is rampant.

While speaking at the 70th anniversary of the Corona Schools Trust Council at St Theresa Nursery and Primary School, Marine Beach, Saliu urged the state government and stakeholders to acquire the area for a secondary school, citing severe security challenges.

“The security situation in the LCDA is so porous that even here in Marine Beach, Gidan Drama has become a nightmare,” he said. “Criminals frequently operate here, and attempts to arrest them are often blocked by top military and police officers.”

He added that suspects often flee into the area after committing crimes, making enforcement difficult. Saliu also revealed that local government officials sometimes face threats or detention while trying to enforce the law.

“I recall three of our staff were arrested two weeks ago and taken to the Naval Dockyard during an intelligence visit to Gidan Drama. I had to intervene for their release,” he said.

Expressing concern over the worsening security situation, Saliu warned about the impact on local youth, saying, “At night, you can see people spending large sums of money to buy illicit drugs in Gidan Drama. The future of our children is uncertain.”

Responding to the allegations, Lt. Col. Musa Yahaya, spokesperson for the 81 Division, said Saliu must clarify which branch of the military he was referring to—Army, Navy, or Air Force—to enable a proper investigation.

“When you say ‘military,’ it could mean Army, Navy, or Air Force. The military is a large organization,” Yahaya said. “Issues like this require thorough investigation before any response. I cannot speak on it for now, but inquiries will be made.”

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.
