In a statement on Sunday, NLC President Joe Ajaero warned that the Senate’s actions could erode public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system and democratic process.

The warning follows the Senate’s passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 on February 4, during which lawmakers rejected Clause 60(3) that sought to make real-time electronic transmission of results from polling units to INEC’s IReV portal mandatory. Instead, the Senate retained a discretionary provision allowing transmission only after results are counted and announced at polling units.

Ajaero said the decision has fueled nationwide concern, noting that subsequent explanations from the Senate have deepened confusion. He accused the legislature of promoting ambiguity at a sensitive time, arguing that unclear laws could further weaken electoral credibility after the disputed 2023 polls.

The labour union demanded a clear and official explanation of the amendment’s final wording and the justification for rejecting mandatory real-time transmission. It warned that failure to make e-transmission compulsory could trigger mass action before, during, or after future elections, or even lead to a total boycott.

While Senate President Godswill Akpabio has insisted the chamber did not completely reject electronic transmission and would not bow to pressure, the Senate has fixed an emergency plenary for Tuesday, February 10, raising expectations that the controversial clause may be reconsidered amid public backlash and possible legal challenges.

Describing politics as a reciprocal process, Wike stressed that the era of empty promises was over:

“Leaders must demonstrate their commitment to delivering good governance. You cannot make promises during elections and vanish afterward without fulfilling them. We asked you to support Tinubu, starting with the area council elections. On February 21, you came through, delivering 133 of the 135 polling units in the council for Tinubu. What more can we say but thank you? You have done your part; we will now do ours. Abaji people have spoken, and they spoke decisively,” he said.
