A former chairman of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, was on Thursday issued a stern warning by the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Asokoro, Abuja, over persistent delays in his ongoing trial, with the court threatening to revoke his bail.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Justice Abubakar Kutigi gave the warning after Maina’s defence team requested yet another adjournment, relying on a hospital referral letter that failed to state any specific ailment.

The judge frowned at the slow pace of the proceedings, observing that the case had been stalled for almost four years due to what he described as the defendant’s “various antics.”

Justice Kutigi noted that despite multiple opportunities to respond to the fraud charges, Maina had consistently avoided meaningful participation in the trial.

He added that the court had obtained an undertaking from the defence to proceed with the case whether or not the defendant was present, effectively dismissing the fresh application for adjournment.

After the ruling, the prosecution, led by Francis Usani, called its 14th witness, Gogi Mohammed, to the stand.

Mohammed told the court that Maina allegedly diverted public funds using officials of the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation through fake contracts, unlawful allowances and a biometric enrolment exercise purportedly carried out for pensioners.

The EFCC investigator further revealed that assets allegedly linked to Maina were traced to his relative, Maimuna Usman, in Kaduna.

He said a search of her residence uncovered documents relating to more than 30 properties, mostly in Abuja and Kaduna, which were allegedly handed over to her by Maina.

According to the witness, some of the properties were purchased outright with cash, including a house in Jabi, Abuja, acquired for $2 million, and another in Life Camp bought for $1.7 million.

He also disclosed that a property on Katoru Road, Kaduna, was purchased for ₦100 million.

Mohammed added that the EFCC has filed an application seeking the forfeiture of the properties.

The court stated that the trial would continue regardless of Maina’s absence, as the protracted ₦738.6 million fraud case proceeds.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
