“Court Orders Probe Of Registrar Over Alleged ₦10bn Fraud Evidence Tampering”.

Published

on

Justice James Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday ordered the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate his court registrar, Nasiru Onimisi Zubairu, and the second defendant, Daudu Sulaiman, in an ongoing ₦10 billion fraud trial for allegedly tampering with evidence.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The exhibits, submitted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), are part of the case against Ali Bello, Chief of Staff to the Kogi State Governor.

The directive came after Justice Omotosho disclosed that Zubairu confessed Sulaiman approached him to delete critical WhatsApp messages from a phone deposited as Exhibits N and O. The judge played Zubairu’s confession in open court and instructed him to narrate the events.

Zubairu told the court that Sulaiman offered to assist him with housing if he deleted certain messages. “I was asked to delete some WhatsApp messages in the exhibits on the promise that I would be given a house,” he admitted.

The court also allowed the prosecution, led by Director of Public Prosecution Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), to direct EFCC investigator Muhammed Audu Abubakar to verify whether the chats had indeed been deleted. Abubakar confirmed that multiple messages between 2020 and 2022 were missing.

When asked which chats he deleted, Zubairu said he could not recall specifics but admitted opening only two conversations. Abubakar provided details of missing messages, including:

  • 26 January 2021: “Hudu is bringing ₦100 million”

  • 30 January 2021: “₦60 million is on transit… they are on their way”

  • 30 August 2021: “Mr Ododo has collected ₦50 million and will be coming tomorrow to Abuja”

  • 2 January 2022: “Hudu is on his way, coming with ₦93m, ₦7m for TJ”

Abubakar confirmed that vital information on the exhibits had indeed been deleted, noting the deletions were discovered during the investigation.

Reacting, Oyedepo demanded a full investigation and forensic examination of Exhibit N and suggested revoking the defendant’s bail due to “urgent and irresistible suspicion that Exhibit N has been tampered with.”

The defence counsel expressed shock but urged the court to await the forensic investigation’s outcome.

Justice Omotosho directed the Police and DSS to carry out the investigation and adjourned the trial to February 9, 2026, for continuation.

Former presidential contender Pat Utomi has commended Peter Obi for his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and join the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC). Following his departure from the ADC, Peter Obi was formally nominated as the NDC’s presidential candidate. In an interview with ARISE Television, Utomi explained that remaining in the ADC would have left Obi “trapped,” noting the controversial nature of that party’s presidential primary. Utomi highlighted that other aspirants, including Chibuike Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-deen, had rejected the primary results and lodged complaints. Consequently, Utomi described Obi’s exit as a strategic and intelligent decision.

Regarding the broader political landscape, Utomi remarked:

  • While polling indicated that Obi would have won within the ADC, the prospect of the party leadership permitting a transparent process was doubtful.

  • He argued that the general management of primary processes across the political spectrum renders them a “complete farce”.

  • He further criticized these events as “make-believe” democratic processes, where candidates are often imposed upon the party.
