According to a statement on Wednesday by Maina’s media assistant, Emmanuel Ekwe, the incident occurred as he attempted to access his office. The collapse was linked to complications from an untreated knee injury.

Ekwe explained that the injury caused Maina to lose his balance and fall, hitting his head on a staircase before medical personnel intervened and rushed him to a private hospital.

He said, “Dr Abdulrasheed Maina slumped on the evening of Tuesday, February 3, 2026, while attempting to enter his office premises. The fall resulted from complications with an untreated knee injury, causing him to lose balance and strike his head on the staircase. Medical personnel administered first aid and immediately transported him to a private hospital in Abuja for urgent care.”

The statement added that doctors are closely monitoring Maina’s condition, and his family has requested privacy during this critical time.

“Dr Maina is under intensive medical observation. Following a preliminary assessment, attending doctors noted that an air ambulance evacuation may be considered if his condition does not stabilize. His family and medical team are closely monitoring his progress and appeal to the public for prayers, understanding, and respect for their privacy. Updates will be shared as developments occur,” it read.

Maina is widely recognized for his controversial tenure as head of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms and the high-profile corruption case that followed.
