While the government has not officially explained the sudden action, speculation suggests it may be linked to a planned security operation within the state.

Sources said the decision was taken to prevent possible reprisal attacks by bandits, particularly against soft targets such as schools.

“The measure is to forestall any retaliatory attack by bandits on vulnerable locations, including schools,” a source disclosed.

Confirming the directive, the Kogi State Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Pastor Reuben Jimoh, notified school owners that the ongoing midterm break had been converted into an emergency closure.

In a message to members, Jimoh said the midterm break had been brought forward, with schools expected to resume on February 16, 2026.

“Accordingly, there will be no school until 16/02/2026. No school should go against this directive,” he stated.

Several schools across the state also issued notices to parents, informing them of the emergency break.

One such notice read, “Dear parents, please be informed that the school has received a directive to proceed on emergency break effective from 4/2/26. The resumption date will be communicated later. Kindly encourage your ward to study at home.”

The Public Relations Officer of the Kogi State Ministry of Education, Solomon Musa, confirmed the statewide closure of schools but declined to give details on the reason for the action.

As of the time of filing this report, the state government had yet to release an official statement explaining the emergency shutdown.
