Military sources told SaharaReporters that the assault occurred Thursday when insurgents stormed the base, firing heavily and causing significant casualties.

“There was an attack, many soldiers were killed, but I don’t have the correct figure yet,” a source said Saturday. The attackers reportedly set fire to armored tanks and military vehicles and looted an unknown quantity of ammunition. ISWAP has claimed responsibility, releasing a statement and a video showing fighters targeting the base.

The incident comes days after another ambush that killed seven military personnel, including newly promoted Lt. Col. Mohammed, whose convoy was attacked on January 26 while moving from Maiduguri to Damasak, Mobbar LGA. Explosives and heavy gunfire were reportedly used, leaving several soldiers injured and some missing.

Analysts note that ISWAP has strengthened its presence around Lake Chad since Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau’s death, with hundreds of former Boko Haram fighters joining its ranks.

Despite the Nigerian Army’s assurances that the insurgency is under control, high-impact attacks persist in the Northeast, resulting in heavy losses often underreported by officials. The conflict has lasted over a decade, leaving more than 100,000 dead and millions displaced, mainly in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states.
