NFF Speaks On Pending FIFA Verdict Over DR Congo Player Dispute.

Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup were dealt a heavy blow after the Super Eagles lost to DR Congo on penalties at the Moulay Hassan Stadium, a result that seemingly sealed a second straight absence from the tournament.
However, weeks after the loss, the NFF submitted a formal petition to FIFA, accusing the Congolese team of breaching player eligibility rules.
NFF General Secretary, Dr Sanusi Mohammed, said the federation would not have taken the matter to FIFA without firm belief in the strength of its case.
“We do not embark on cases we believe are pointless,” Mohammed said during an interview with Brila FM.
“From our standpoint, we have a strong case, and we are simply awaiting FIFA’s response to the complaints we have filed.”
FIFA has yet to make an official pronouncement on the issue, leaving both Nigeria and DR Congo in limbo as they await a final verdict.
The delay has sparked debate among fans and analysts, with some critics — including former Super Eagles captain and coach, Sunday Oliseh — questioning the decision to challenge the result off the pitch rather than accept the outcome of the match.
Despite the backlash, the NFF insists its petition is firmly based on FIFA regulations, particularly those governing player eligibility and dual nationality. DR Congo, meanwhile, have denied any wrongdoing and continue to retain their qualification slot.
As it stands, DR Congo are scheduled to compete in the inter-confederation play-off tournament in Mexico on March 26 and 31, 2026, where two remaining World Cup spots will be decided.
The six-team tournament features Iraq, Jamaica, Suriname, New Caledonia and Bolivia, with DR Congo set to face the winner of the New Caledonia versus Jamaica clash, although the lineup could still change.
Should FIFA rule in Nigeria’s favour, the Super Eagles could be reinstated, reopening a possible route to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.
