The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has condemned the defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a betrayal of the party, its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the people of Kano State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The NNPP National Spokesperson, Ladipo Johnson, made the remark on Monday during a television interview, where he said the governor’s decision had deeply disappointed both party leaders and supporters.

Responding to questions on whether Kwankwaso felt personally betrayed, Johnson said the sense of betrayal went beyond the former governor to the electorate that voted the NNPP into office.

“Naturally, he feels betrayed. But it is not just about him,” Johnson said.

“The people endured eight years of what they considered poor governance and turned out in large numbers to give the NNPP a mandate under Kwankwaso’s leadership.”

Johnson recalled that the NNPP had no established political structure in Kano before the 2023 elections but still won the governorship.

“We had no councillor, no local government chairman, yet we won the state. The people voted for the NNPP from scratch,” he said.

He added that Kano voters stood firmly behind Yusuf throughout the legal battles that followed the election, from the tribunal to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.

According to Johnson, Yusuf’s decision to defect to the APC without consulting the electorate amounted to a violation of public trust.

“Without consulting the people, you return power to those who were voted out after eight years. That is betrayal, no matter how it is presented,” he said.

He also dismissed claims that Yusuf could have won the election without Kwankwaso’s backing.

“It is easy to say that now. They are enjoying their moment. I am certain Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf himself would not boldly make that claim anywhere,” Johnson added.

NNPP ‘Devastated But Strong’

Also speaking on the programme, NNPP Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Karaye, said the party was deeply hurt by the governor’s defection but remained politically formidable in Kano.

“We are truly devastated. We feel betrayed and unhappy with this development. However, the NNPP remains strong and is still the party to beat in Kano,” Karaye said.

He alleged that party leaders were sidelined and denied access to the governor ahead of his defection.

“The governor shut his doors. There was no access to him,” Karaye claimed.

Karaye also rejected claims that Yusuf left the NNPP because of internal crises, insisting the party remained united.

Yusuf Officially Joins APC

Governor Yusuf formally joined the APC on Monday alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and nine members of the House of Representatives.

The defection was announced at a political gathering held at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.

Addressing party leaders and supporters, Yusuf said the move followed wide consultations across the state and was aimed at improving governance.

“We are choosing partnership over polarisation. Political parties are vehicles; the destination is positive change for the people of Kano. Judge this decision by the results we deliver,” he said.

Top APC figures at the event included a former National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Ganduje; Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin; and Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Abubakar Kabiru Bichi.

Yusuf’s political rise had been closely linked to Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya movement until their split in January 2026.

Widely seen as Kwankwaso’s protégé, Yusuf emerged victorious in the 2023 governorship election on the NNPP platform, polling 1,019,602 votes to defeat the APC candidate.

Deregistration Drama: Courtroom Showdown Over ADC And Accord Party Hits A New Delay!.

Published

  • Case Adjournment: The Court of Appeal in Abuja has postponed the hearing of an appeal regarding the potential deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party, and three other political parties until July 7.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

    • Procedural Delay: The court moved the hearing date from June 25 to allow the involved parties sufficient time to file and exchange their briefs of argument.

    • Reasoning for New Date: Although Accord Party counsel, Musibau Adetunbi (SAN), requested a three-day window to file, Justice Abubakar Mohammed explained that the panel’s upcoming official commitments necessitated selecting July 7 as the earliest available date.

    • Background of the Dispute: The appeal follows a Federal High Court ruling by Justice Peter Lifu, which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the ADC, Accord Party, Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) for allegedly failing to meet constitutional performance benchmarks.

    • INEC’s Position: INEC has challenged this deregistration order, arguing that these parties met the necessary constitutional thresholds by securing elective positions in previous elections and providing certificates of return as evidence.

    • Stay of Execution: On June 16, the Court of Appeal previously ordered a stay of execution on the Federal High Court’s judgment, preventing INEC from proceeding with the deregistration until the current appeal is decided.

    • Procedural Criticism: The appellate court had previously criticized Justice Lifu for ignoring an earlier order to suspend proceedings, noting that such an action undermined the established hierarchy of the courts.

    • Origin of the Suit: The original legal challenge was filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators, who argued that these specific parties failed to meet the electoral performance standards required by the 1999 Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act.
