The 16 military officers accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu are reportedly facing severe penalties that could range from lengthy imprisonment to the death sentence.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The military high command has confirmed that the officers, who have been in custody since October 2025, were found culpable following an internal investigation. The investigative panel has since submitted its report to the President.

Retired senior military officers have explained that under Nigeria’s Armed Forces Act, attempting a coup is a capital offence punishable by death.

According to the retired officers, the law leaves little room for leniency unless the President, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, chooses to exercise mercy.

They noted that coups are regarded as grave criminal offences within the military system, stressing that once investigations establish the existence of a coup plot, all those involved must face the consequences of their actions.

They further explained that the death penalty has historically been the prescribed punishment for coup attempts in Nigeria, largely to deter others from undermining democratic governance.

While the President has the constitutional authority to determine the final outcome or reduce sentences, the standard punishment under military law remains death.

The retired officers also argued that the armed forces have a constitutional responsibility to defend democracy, insisting that anyone seeking to destabilise the country should be held fully accountable.

They added that firm punishment, applied through proper legal processes, is necessary to discourage threats to national security and democratic stability.

President Bola Tinubu has firmly criticized former vice-presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, dismissing his recent proposal to reinstate the petrol subsidy regime as a fundamental lack of understanding of economic management and governance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Upon taking office, the current administration discontinued the fuel subsidy and floated the national currency to address structural economic imbalances. While these sweeping policy changes triggered widespread financial pressures and heightened the cost of living for average citizens, the government maintains that the reforms were essential for long-term fiscal stability.

Addressing critics from the Presidential Villa, President Tinubu defended the decision by highlighting its immediate impact on sub-national finances. He pointed out that prior to the intervention, numerous state governments struggled to meet monthly obligations to workers and retirees. According to the administration, the savings generated from ending the subsidy have since enabled states to consistently service salary arrears and pension commitments, framing the policy shift as a vital corrective measure for the nation’s broader financial framework.
