“Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Joins APC, Sparks Fury Among Opposition Parties”.
The political landscape in Kano State experienced a dramatic shift on Monday as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf confirmed his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), igniting widespread reactions from opposition parties across Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
From Abuja to Kano, the announcement sparked accusations of betrayal, claims of political survival, and reminders that elite defections do not automatically translate into voter support.
While the APC celebrated Yusuf’s move, opposition parties insisted that his decision would not alter the political equation ahead of the 2027 elections, emphasizing that ultimate power rests with the electorate, not governors switching allegiances. In Kano, where politics is largely shaped by grassroots movements rather than individual officeholders, the defection carries symbolic weight.
Yusuf, who rose to prominence under the NNPP and the influential Kwankwasiyya Movement—a network rooted in mass mobilisation and associated with former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso—has reignited old debates and memories of past defections that failed at the ballot box.
Within hours, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Labour Party condemned Yusuf’s exit, framing it as driven by personal gain rather than the popular mandate. They stressed that elections are won by voters, not by press announcements or registration ceremonies.
PDP, ADC Reject Defection Move
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, described the wave of defections as a moral lapse, exposing flaws in Nigeria’s political culture. He argued that elected officials are bound by a social contract with the people tied to the party platform that brought them to office.
“The troubling part is that this is not how the system is supposed to work,” Ememobong said. “Once elected on a platform, it is morally wrong to abandon it midway. If one wishes to contest under a new party, the proper course is to wait until the end of the tenure or vacate office, allowing the original party to retain the mandate.”
He added that the APC’s growing list of defectors reflects fear rather than strength, asserting, “Presidential elections are not won by forcing defections or by making the electorate suffer. The people did not defect along with these governors. Nigerians who remain independent will decide the outcome.”
ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi echoed the sentiment, suggesting governors’ moves to APC are motivated by personal protection and political convenience. “They join the ruling party seeking a free ride to a second term, not because they endorse its policies or care about the people,” he said. Abdullahi dismissed claims that defections would guarantee votes, citing examples from Delta, Edo, and Lagos states where governors failed to deliver electoral victories despite party control.
Labour Party Interim National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman also cautioned against equating elite defections with grassroots influence. Using a Hausa proverb, she stressed that political impact cannot be measured solely by defections, admitting uncertainty over the motivations but noting circulating rumors about “sins being forgiven” upon joining the APC.
APC Welcomes Yusuf
Amid the uproar, the APC framed Yusuf’s return as a homecoming. Party Director of Publicity Bala Ibrahim emphasized that Yusuf had once been an APC member before joining the NNPP. “The influx of political heavyweights reflects growing acceptance of our principles and policies,” Ibrahim said, dismissing opposition claims that defections would not matter in 2027 as wishful thinking.
Yusuf Defends His Move
Governor Yusuf defended his decision as one motivated by governance and development rather than politics. Ahead of his formal APC registration, he said, “This is not just a political move; it is a step to ensure governance remains people-centred and our developmental agenda reaches every corner of Kano State.” He added that his focus is on unity and cooperation across party lines.
Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, confirmed that he would officially register into the APC alongside 22 Kano State House of Assembly members, eight House of Representatives members, and all 44 local government chairmen, inaugurating the party’s e-registration exercise in the state.
NNPP Reacts in Fury
The NNPP described Yusuf’s defection as a betrayal. Party National Publicity Secretary Oladipo Johnson argued the governor’s move rejects the movement that brought him to power, dismissing claims of a crisis within the party. He referenced recent congresses and electoral victories under the NNPP, emphasizing historical lessons from past defections, including former governor Abubakar Rimi’s 1983 loss despite mass defections.
National Implications
Yusuf’s defection adds to a growing list of governors who have moved to the APC, including Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), along with several lawmakers, ex-governors, and former ministers.
President Bola Tinubu and APC leaders continue to assert that the party remains open and inclusive, denying allegations of a one-party agenda. Attention also turns to former APC National Chairman and ex-governor Abdullahi Ganduje, expected to welcome Yusuf upon his return from London, underlining the symbolic importance of the defection.
As political camps harden ahead of the 2027 elections, one reality remains clear: in Kano, the battle for political influence is driven as much by grassroots mobilization as by elite maneuvers, and the ultimate verdict will rest with the electorate.

1. ‘We Will Scrutinise It’ – Oshiomhole Sends Message Over Tinubu’s Fresh Loan Request
Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has assured Nigerians that the National Assembly will carefully scrutinise President Bola Tinubu’s fresh loan request before deciding whether to approve it.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The request has sparked reactions from Nigerians and opposition parties, with some questioning the need for additional borrowing, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Oshiomhole maintained that the Senate would not approve the loan without thoroughly examining its details.
The former Edo State governor said lawmakers had a responsibility to demand explanations about how previous loans were utilised and the specific projects the new borrowings were intended to finance.
He also expressed confidence that the Senate, under the leadership of Godswill Akpabio, would not merely endorse the President’s request without proper scrutiny.
Oshiomhole said, “The Senate will scrutinise Tinubu’s fresh loan request. We won’t just approve it like that. We must look at it properly and ensure it is in the interest of Nigerians.”
Meanwhile, Oshiomhole has defended President Tinubu against criticism over his decision not to attend every campaign rally organised by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The senator argued that the President did not have to be physically present at every campaign event to effectively discharge his responsibilities.
During a television interview on Friday, Oshiomhole also maintained that there was nothing wrong with Tinubu participating in religious activities while continuing to attend to the affairs of the country.

Political Twist: Vatsa Gets New Appointment Shortly After Leaving APC.

Vatsa has been named Spokesperson and Director of Contacts and Mobilisation for the SDP governorship campaign council.
The party’s governorship candidate, Mohammed Ndarani Mohammed, SAN, announced the appointments in a letter personally signed by him and made available to journalists in Minna on Friday.
The announcement followed Vatsa’s defection to the SDP alongside more than 200 supporters.
Before leaving the APC, the former commissioner served as the party’s pioneer Publicity Secretary in Niger State.
Explaining the decision, Ndarani described Vatsa as a vocal politician with extensive grassroots connections, media experience and strong mobilisation skills.
He said Vatsa’s political background and communication abilities would be valuable to the party as it prepares to challenge the ruling APC in the 2027 governorship election.
In the appointment letter, Ndarani praised Vatsa’s political influence, public speaking ability and experience in media management.
“Your appointment is a testament to your towering political profile, fearless advocacy, exceptional oratory, media management skills, profound grassroots penetration and unmatched mobilisation prowess,” the letter stated.
The SDP candidate explained that assigning Vatsa the two responsibilities was a deliberate decision informed by his experience in public communication and grassroots politics.
He further described him as one of the most fearless, outspoken and respected political voices in Niger State.
“You speak powerfully and you mobilise massively. We need your voice to shape public opinion and your network to deliver the votes,” Ndarani added.
As campaign spokesperson, Vatsa will serve as the official voice of the campaign council and oversee communication of the party’s five-point agenda to voters.
In his role as Director of Contacts and Mobilisation, he will coordinate grassroots activities across the state’s 25 local government areas, 247 political wards and 4,950 polling units.
He is also expected to engage community leaders, traditional rulers and religious organisations to strengthen the party’s support base.
Other responsibilities include coordinating house-to-house, door-to-door, market-to-market and farm-to-farm campaign activities across Niger State.

Wike Reveals Why He Rejected Senate Ambition After Two Terms As Rivers Governor.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed why he decided against contesting for a Senate seat after completing two terms as governor of Rivers State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Wike explained that he was not interested in joining the National Assembly because he believed becoming a senator would limit his ability to speak freely on national issues.
The minister made this known on Friday during the commissioning of a pedestrian bridge at the Dunamis International Gospel Centre in Abuja.
He noted that several former governors pursue National Assembly seats after leaving office but said he chose a different path to preserve his freedom of expression.
“Many governors today, when they are done, they want to go to the National Assembly, but I said that I won’t go. They asked me why, and I said I would be prevented from speaking my mind.
“Since I won’t be able to speak my mind, there is no need for me to go there. That is true. Everybody has forgotten what this country was before now,” he said.
The former Rivers State governor maintained that he would continue to speak openly about issues affecting Nigeria, irrespective of the political office he occupies.
Wike also urged political and religious leaders to prioritise effective leadership and policies that would improve the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.
He emphasised that those entrusted with positions of authority must place the welfare and interests of the people above other considerations.
