Ex-LP Campaign DG Osuntokun Resigns, Joins New Party.

Published

Akin Osuntokun, former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, has officially resigned from the Labour Party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Osuntokun, who also served as Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, confirmed his defection to journalists in Lagos, citing deep internal crises and what he described as deliberate sabotage within the Labour Party.

He accused the current LP leadership of prioritizing personal and transactional interests over the party’s ideals and the country’s democratic goals.

“You should know that the people in control of the Labour Party are internal saboteurs,” he told Vanguard. “They are more interested in selling the party to the highest bidder than in genuine nation-building.”

Osuntokun added that his decision was influenced by the earlier exit of key political allies, including the Peter Obi group.

“The team I came with to the Labour Party had already left, so this move is a continuation of that reality,” he said. He also criticized the party for being used for purposes contrary to national development.

The lingering leadership crisis within the LP, particularly the court ruling recognizing Senator Nenadi Usman as the valid national chairman while nullifying the Julius Abure-led committee, further influenced his departure. Osuntokun noted that the Abure faction’s intention to appeal keeps the situation unstable.

Describing the ADC as the most credible opposition platform currently, he said his move was motivated by the need to prevent Nigeria from sliding into a one-party state.

“One of the reasons I joined is to contribute to strengthening a platform that can prevent a one-party dictatorship in Nigeria,” he stated. “The ADC has become a formidable opposition platform capable of countering authoritarian tendencies.”

Osuntokun also revealed that former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi helped accelerate his return to the ADC, which he described as a homecoming. He had played a role in the party’s formation, which emerged from the Coalition for Nigerian Movement led by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Several prominent opposition figures have adopted the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, 2023 LP presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola. This growing influx is part of broader efforts to build a strong opposition coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
