Alaafin Snubs Oyo’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Oyo State launched activities to mark its 50th anniversary on Monday, but the absence of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, from the opening ceremony drew attention and raised concerns about tensions among the state’s traditional institutions.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The event was held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, with Governor Seyi Makinde delivering the welcome address and the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Edward Ogundoyin, presenting a goodwill message.

Oyo State, created on February 3, 1976, by the late General Murtala Mohammed’s military government, kicked off a year‑long celebration of its golden jubilee.

Dignitaries present at Monday’s ceremony included the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, and other monarchs from across Oyo. However, the seat reserved for the Alaafin remained empty, a development that did not go unnoticed.

The Alaafin’s absence reinforced perceptions of a conflict between him and the Olubadan, following a tense encounter at the 2026 interfaith gathering near the Oyo State House of Assembly.

A viral video from that event captured a brief but awkward moment: the Alaafin, already seated, extended his hand to greet Oba Ladoja as he approached, but the Olubadan did not acknowledge the gesture and withdrew his hand.

In response, a coalition of traditional leaders, including monarchs, mogajis, baales, and prominent Ibadan indigenes, issued a statement condemning what they described as disrespect toward Ibadan’s traditional institution.

“Alaafin’s disregard for the Olubadan stool and the traditional institution is becoming unacceptable,” the statement read.

The leaders insisted that Ibadanland is not subordinate to the Alaafin and criticized the protocol of offering a handshake while seated. They warned that if Governor Makinde does not intervene, and Ibadan chiefs, mogajis, and baales feel compelled to respond to what they see as insulting behavior, the Alaafin would bear full responsibility.

They added that while Ibadan people have exercised restraint in past incidents, they will no longer tolerate actions that they believe demean their culture and traditions.

Residents of Umunenweze village within the Okaiuga Nkwoegwu autonomous community in Umuahia North Local Government Area, Abia State, have called on the state government for urgent intervention to halt ongoing land grabbing activities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Protest and Allegations of Illegal Sales

During a peaceful protest at the disputed Okpuijikara land, community members warned that the situation threatens imminent violence and widespread hunger. Speaking on behalf of the village, the spokesperson, Onyekachi Igbojionu, alleged that a few individuals secretly allocated ancestral farmlands—reserved for farming and future housing—to private estate developers without the community’s consent.

Igbojionu noted that these actions persist in defiance of an existing court order issued by Justice A.U. Kalu of the Abia State High Court, Umuahia, under suit number HU/163/2022. Furthermore, residents expressed deep concern that local school lands have also been targeted for unauthorized distribution.

Appeal to Governor Alex Otti

The community appealed directly to Governor Alex Otti to intervene and prevent bloodshed, emphasizing their commitment to using legal, peaceful, and judicial means to protect their heritage. Echoing these concerns, Mrs. Janeth Nwagboso stated that women are now too fearful to farm on the land, worsening local unemployment and hunger.

It is noteworthy that the Abia State government previously acknowledged receiving petitions regarding the land dispute on June 3, 2026, pledging to pursue an amicable resolution.
